Mindfulness. Grounding. Movement. Yoga. Not all somatic (body-based) interventions treat CPTSD.

These practices can be valuable, but Complex PTSD may require more specialized work with the body.

Phase Three of our CPTSD framework focuses on trauma-specific somatic treatment, including gradually reconnecting with bodily sensations, understanding trauma-based responses, and developing new patterns of regulation.

The goal isn't to force someone deeper into their body, to work out, to release trauma or to claim a cure.

It's to help the body become a safer, more understandable place to live.

Save this post or share it with someone interested in a more complete understanding of CPTSD treatment.

Sometimes one loss doesn't even have time to settle before another one arrives. ๐Ÿ’”๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿซ€๐Ÿฅ€๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

You lose someone you love. Then the children you've been caring for are taken from you too.

Your body begins trembling. Your breathing becomes shallow. You freeze. And somehow, in the middle of everything, you blame yourself. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿง ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿซ€๐Ÿฅ€

When loss arrives faster than you can process it, overwhelm can reach far beyond your emotions.

Sometimes the body shuts down when there is simply too much to hold.

That is not weakness. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’”

Send this to someone whose world changed faster than their heart could process. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿซ‚๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿ’”

Trauma doesn't always stay in the past.

Research on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) has helped us understand the connection between early adversity and health outcomes later in life.

When the body is exposed to prolonged toxic stress, especially under circumstances we cannot escape or change, that stress can contribute to physiological changes, including inflammation, that may increase vulnerability to health problems over time.

This doesn't mean trauma inevitably causes chronic illness. It means our physical health is an important part of understanding the long-term impact of complex trauma.

The mind and body aren't separate parts of the trauma story.

Surviving is not the finish line of CPTSD treatment.

When symptoms decrease and crises become less frequent, another part of recovery can begin: rebuilding.

Phase Five of CPTSD treatment focuses on ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜„๐˜๐—ต, supporting people as they strengthen their sense of self, relationships, coping, interests, priorities, and plans for the future.

The energy that was once reserved for surviving can begin to move toward personal growth.

Recovery isn't about erasing what happened.

It's about creating space for a life that is no longer organized around trauma.

Sometimes you learn to disappear long before anyone notices you're gone. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿซ€๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿฅ€๐Ÿค

When someone else's needs always come first, you may learn to stay quiet, ask for less, and stop expecting anyone to notice when you're struggling. ๐Ÿง โš ๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿซ€๐Ÿ’”

Over time, that can become โ€œ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†โ€โ€”making yourself smaller when your needs repeatedly have nowhere to go.

You did not become invisible because your needs did not matter.

You learned to make yourself smaller because there never seemed to be enough room for you.

That is not the same as being unworthy of care. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’”

Save this to remind yourself that taking up space does not make you a burden. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿซ‚๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿ’”

Audreyโ€™s work is grounded in the belief that trauma-specific care means looking beneath symptoms to the deeper wounds that may be shaping them. Her approach is collaborative, body-aware, and flexible, with movement, nature, and nervous system regulation playing an important role in the healing process.

She also brings plenty of herself into the work: a love of the outdoors, birding, backpacking, paddle boarding, and a deep respect for the resilience she sees in her clients every day.

๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐˜'๐˜€ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ: the goal is always to help people ๐˜๐˜ˆ๐˜Š๐˜Œ, ๐˜๐˜Œ๐˜Œ๐˜“, ๐˜ˆ๐˜•๐˜‹ ๐˜‹๐˜Œ๐˜ˆ๐˜“ with their traumatic past. But before this, prepare the person.

For people living with CPTSD, going straight into traumatic memories may be too much, too soon.

Our new treatment guidelines, published in the Clinical Social Work Journal, mirror Judith Herman's original work and identify ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป as the first phase of CPTSD treatment.

Safety. Trust. Immediate needs. Psychoeducation. These aren't delays in trauma treatment. They're part of the treatment.

Without adequate preparation, deeper trauma processing can lead to flooding and early termination of treatment.

CPTSD treatment should meet people where they are, not rush them toward where we think they should be.

From the outside, it can look like confidence.
From the inside, it can feel like survival. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿซ€๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿฅ€๐Ÿค

You keep achieving.
Keep performing.
Keep pushing yourself.

But behind every success is a nervous system that never feels allowed to stop. ๐Ÿง โš ๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿซ€๐Ÿ’”

In this case, panic attacks began before competitions, alongside body shaming, bullying, and being repeatedly called "dumb."

For many people living with CPTSD, high performance is not about chasing perfection.

Sometimes it's about trying to outrun shame, fear, or the belief that you must earn your worth.

Success can hide suffering.

And achievement does not always mean someone feels safe. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’”

Share this with someone who looks like they're doing well, but is carrying more than anyone knows. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿซ‚๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿ’”
