Never lead a horse into a closed space.

A horse that feels trapped moves fast.

If the gate is not fully open before you ask the horse to walk through, you are creating a problem before it needs to exist.

Open the gate completely.
Stand to the side.
Ask the horse to walk forward calmly.
You go with the horse not ahead of it, not behind it.

This is one of the first ground handling habits every rider learns at Forecast Farms before they ever pick up a rein.

Save this barn safety tip and walk through it with your rider the next time you are at the barn.

Most riders collapse without realizing it.

Slouching is not always obvious from the saddle.

It happens gradually.
Shoulders round, the lower back softens, the seat loses contact.

The horse feels a collapsed rider as an unsteady one.
Sit tall between your pockets.
That means lengthening the space between your seat bones and your shoulders without stiffening.

Think up, not back.

A tall spine keeps your weight even, your aids clear, and your balance centered over the horse.

This is one of the most corrected habits in every beginner horseback riding lesson at Forecast Farms.

Save this posture reminder and check yourself at the start of every ride.

Waiting quietly is a riding skill.

There are moments at the barn when nothing seems to be happening.

A pony is tied.
The instructor is finishing with another rider.
The aisle is still.

Some riders fidget.
Others drift toward their phones.
A few lean against the wall and just watch.

The ones who watch tend to notice things.
The way the pony shifts its weight. A change in breathing.
Whether the ears are forward or soft.

That kind of attention doesn't develop in the saddle.
It develops in the in-between moments... the ones that don't feel like learning because nobody announced that they were.

Stillness is a superpower. 🧘♂️🐴

It can be a big moment for a parent to see a horse pull back on its lead rope.
But at Forecast Farms, we prepare our riders for these exact moments by teaching them the power of Calm Leadership.

When a horse panics, our instinct is to rush in or shout.
We teach our students to do the opposite: stay still and give the horse space to breathe.
By staying calm, the rider becomes the "anchor" the horse needs to settle down.
This is a lesson in emotional regulation that helps kids stay cool-headed in the arena and in the classroom!

Do you know how to identify your horse's vital signs?
Vital Signs can include…
🌡️TEMPERATURE
🫀 HEART RATE (aka Pulse)
🫁 RESPIRATION
You may hear in the barn people refer to taking a horse’s TPR; they are referring to these vital signs. It is important to learn how to record this information about your horses to identify when they could be in distress. Catching problems early is always the best-case scenario.

🌟LESSON HORSE SPOTLIGHT🌟
This month’s lesson horse spotlight is Remi, aka Re*****on Steel! 💪✨ Remi is a 12 y/o Percheron/Thoroughbred cross who is our resident gentle giant. Remi’s favorite treat is literally anything, the staff have lovingly coined him as their garbage disposal🤣🍔 Remi’s caretakers also say that if he could be any celebrity he would either be Harry Potter, because of his cool lightning bolt star, or the Big Gentle Giant, for his large but kind nature⚡️

Remi is available for lessons! This saint teaches kids down to 7 ba****ck, and adults up to 70! He has done it all and takes care of his rider- whoever they may be. Come learn from Remi’s kind and gentle soul today! 🥰💖
