There are conversations happening in the pits that most people will never understand.
A dad leaning down beside his son’s race car. A few words before the next race. Maybe a little advice, a reminder, a question, or just one more attempt to make sure his boy is ready to go out there and do what he loves.
And if you know this kid, we can probably all guess how this conversation is going.
We joke that he probably isn't listening. That he's already thinking about something else, nodding along while secretly saying, “Whatever… where is WELDON?!.”
And honestly, maybe he is.
But here's the thing about being a kid in racing. You don't always realize what you're looking at when you're standing right in the middle of it.
You see Dad working on the car. Dad loading the trailer. Dad making the drive. Dad figuring out what needs fixed, what needs replaced, what the next race looks like, and how to get you there. You see the hours, the weekends, the money, the sacrifices, and all the things that somehow have to happen before you ever get to climb into that seat.
But one day, you might look back and realize that Dad wasn't just getting you to the racetrack.
He was giving you a childhood built around something you love. He was giving you opportunities to chase dreams bigger than yourself. He was teaching you determination, commitment, and what it means to keep showing up, even when it isn't easy.
This photo was taken during one of those conversations. His next trip to Port City would end in a rainout. The trip after that, he'd be climbing into a car in a whole new class.
Racing never sits still for long. There is always another challenge, another goal, another class to learn, another night to get better. And for a kid chasing the national points scene, the dream doesn't stop when the trailer gets unloaded. It takes a whole family willing to chase it, too.
And somewhere in all of that, there's a dad who keeps making it happen.
Maybe his son doesn't hear every word right now. Maybe someday he'll remember the racing more clearly than the conversations. Maybe he'll remember the wins, the disappointments, the long nights, and the excitement of moving up to the next class.
But I hope that when he gets older, he remembers something else, too.
I hope he remembers who was there beside that car. Who believed in him enough to keep going. Who gave up his own time, comfort, and countless weekends so his son could chase a dream that belonged to him.
Because one day, the car will change. The classes will change. The tracks will change. The points will reset, and the seasons will come and go.
But the years a father spends standing beside his son, helping him chase something he loves? Those years don't come back.
And maybe that's what makes moments like this so special.
We see a dad talking to his boy about a race car.
But underneath that conversation is something much bigger.
It's a father giving his son every opportunity he can to chase a dream. It's a boy growing up with someone in his corner, someone willing to do the work long before the rest of the world sees the results.
And even if the kid is already thinking, “Whatever, just get my Weldon,” we know there's a whole lot of love sitting on that dirt beside him.
Someday, he might not remember what Dad said in this exact moment.
But I have a feeling he'll always remember that Dad was there.
And sometimes, that's the greatest gift a father can give his son.
Not just a chance to race.
But the knowledge that he never had to chase his dreams alone.
