Destination Juneau County - Nature and Lakes are your Backyard
When visiting Juneau County, make a plan to spend a good chunk of your time outside exploring. Three major attractions near the Village of Necedah are the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, Buckhorn State Park, and the Petenwell Flowage. You could spend a full day at each place hiking, fishing, birding, and anything else you wish in nature. If you're in the area and hungry, check out Bohicas Pub & Grub. Daily specials, patio seating along the water, and of course good food.
New Lisbon offers visitors a great place to stop with dining in mind. Tuesday's Bar & Grill are famous for their charbroiled burgers while Opera House Bar & Grill can whip up a mean pizza. If you find yourself over near Castle Rock Lake, stop at Germantown Junction & Dog Days for Vienna Chicago Hot Dogs. Germantown Junction also fills propane tanks for campers and grillers alike.
If you're looking to take in the countryside on two wheels, Elroy Commons is where you need to go. There you can rent bikes, purchase trail passes and bike the historic Elroy Sparta Trail.
For a tiny county they have two fantastic public golf courses. Rockin 9 Golf Course/ Restaurant offers 9 holes of golf at an extremely affordable rate. Rockin 9 might also have best live music scene in the county as well. You should also enjoy one of their farm-to-table meals as well. The other golf course is Castle Rock Golf Course which offers 18 holes of competitive golf. After your round, cold refreshing drinks can be found at the bar.
If you make it to the Lyndon Station area, Dive Bar Road Trip contestant, Swagger Inn will treat you just right with a belly full of food and cold drinks.
Mauston is the county seat and has much to see. First off, make time to visit Wisconsin River Meats World Class retail location. They have more versions of brats and snack sticks than you will know what to do with. If supporting veteran owned businesses is important to you, Heinie's Tavern is one to check out. They will serve you up a great bar burger or on the weekend, their famous Bloody Mary bar. Lastly, if you're looking for a more fancy meal, The Lodge At Mauston Broken Spur restaurant has some of the best steak and seafood in the area.
You time in Juneau County can turn into an extended vacation rather easily. Campgrounds are plentiful with a variety of amenities as well as hotel and cabin rentals. For campground, Western Woods Campground & Shangri-La Campground both offer great on-site activities and amenities just outside of Wisconsin Dells. Howling Hills Campground is between Wonewoc and Union Center. A newer campground with owners who are ready to help you relax and enjoy a quiet weekend in a camper or cabin. Lastly, Castle Rock Hideaway has both cabins and a campground. The campground is brand new, offering full hookup, and in a peaceful location with lots of trees.
For general lodging, The Lodge at Mauston is uniquely decorated and close to Woodside Ranch while St. Joseph Resort is near Necedah and has motel rooms, cabins, and a campground with full hookup.
Did you say you were looking for a fantastic buffet? Chapparal Restaurant has buffets from Wednesday through Sunday and each night is different.
