Mission of Rails to Trails is to: acquire, develop and maintain multi-purpose recreational trails on or near abandoned railroad corridors for public use.

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY is blessed with over 30 miles beautiful unused rail corridors winding through picturesque countryside and villages and trucks, railroads were essential for transportation and for moving agricultural and manufactured goods and supplies through rural areas. In recent decades, railroads have abandoned most of their lines serving rural areas. In an era preceding paved roads and mechanically reliable cars, Chautauqua Rails-to-Trails is preserving these abandoned rail corridors for conversion into safe off-road trails for recreational use: walking, running, hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing, bird watching (over 170 species identified) and horseback riding. These trails provide public access from towns like Mayville, Brocton, and Sherman through scenic woodlands, wetlands and flowering meadows, offering trail users opportunities to observe the plants, animals and birds found in areas otherwise remote from highways and roads. The trails are available for outdoor recreational activities and environmental study for the public at large and for group outings sponsored by schools, scouts, churches and service organizations.

We at CR2T are doing our best to keep the trails in good shape... remember, we don't have a staff, we don't get County or State funding...we rely on your annual support, our fund raisers and the occasional grant.

Third Saturday Co-Sponsored Hike: Boutwell Hill Saturday, October 17, 2026 • 9:30 AM

Hello Everyone,

For the October 17th co-sponsored hike we will be hiking at Boutwell Hill State Forest on Ruttenbur Rd, Cherry Creek. This trail is part of the Eastside Overland Trail. A lot of trail maintenance has recently been done. It will be an in and out hike. Total distance is about 4 miles. There will be an option about half way for people to turn back if they want a shorter version. Bring water, and poles if you like to use them. The first section is pretty easy, the second half will have a bit more hilly terrain. Everyone is welcome to join us. Angelika will the leader for this outing. Here’s a link for the location.

Today brought another beautiful fall day to enjoy the trails, with golden leaves and sunshine lighting the way!

We restocked Chautauqua Rails to Trails guides and Erie to Pittsburgh Trail maps and guides at several trailheads today. We also supplied copies to our neighbors across the Pennsylvania border to share at their trailheads, helping more people discover the wonderful trails our region has to offer.

Grab a guide, take in the fall colors, and enjoy a little outdoor adventure!

Mother Nature is putting on quite a show at the Prospect Station Trailhead! This time of year, the sunsets are especially beautiful as the sun dips over Lake Erie in the distance. Come for a walk, stay for the view!

CR2T is currently accepting bids for mowing our trail from Brocton to Sherman for the 2027 season, please dm if you are interested or share this info with a friend or family member that might have a business or operation for more information.

A big thank you to all the geocachers who helped clean up the Allison Wells Ney Trail in Brocton today! Over 20 Geocachers from across Western New York, Northwest Pennsylvania, and Ohio came together to lend a hand as part of the first ever CITO Across the World event. Your time, teamwork, and community spirit helped make the trail a better place for everyone to enjoy!

The co sponsored hike for Sept 19th will be on the Westside Overland trail. 9:30am. We will be hiking the northernmost section of the trail , including the gorge loop. This is a somewhat hilly terrain. If you like to use hiking poles, bring them along. Meet at the parking lot on Summerdale Rd that is shared with Rails to Trails. Distance is approx. 5 miles. Let's hope for some nice fall weather. Bring water and a friend! See you there.
