We have issued an Avalanche Watch for the next 24 hours in anticipation of a large incoming storm, bringing heavy winds, 1-2” of water, 12-18 inches of snowfall, and a rain/snow line that will creep up to 7,000+ feet. Anticipate very dangerous conditions that may create large avalanches in unexpected ways, even on small but steep terrain features such as road cuts. This Watch is for the Salmon River Zone, West Mountain Zone, and surroundings areas such as the South Fork and Yellow Pine.

With over a foot of new snow overnight above 6,500’, expect to find natural avalanche activity and human-triggered avalanches are likely. This storm is very turbulent, will produce a variety of different small avalanches within the new snow, and two deeper layers of snow remain problematic. These are now capable or producing a large to very large avalanche, and very cautious route-finding is necessary today and the coming days. You can trigger an avalanche above, below, or next to slopes. Steer clear of steep slopes above 6,500’. This is a poor feedback environment: remember that increasing hazard does not mean every steep slope will avalanche, but the likelihood you find trouble if you choose a steep slope is rapidly increasing.
