Two Glacier lakes from one vantage point. Standing on the tiny isthmus between the two lakes at the "toe" of the Kennicott Glacier. You can get out here on either or half day raft or kayak tours

We had a few visitors during our safety talk... Katmai National Park has the highest concentration of grizzly bears in the world. The abundance of food like salmon and berries makes the bears less territorial than in other places. The concentration showed after seeing 20+bears on a 4 day trip!

One of the best things about an Upper Chitina River trip are the side stops and hikes. We stopped in at the Barnard Glacier river outlet for a stroll through some dwarf fireweed, dryas and to soak in some amazing views of the Barnard Glacier.

This is 1 of 2 glaciers that come to down towards the river. The secret? It is a WIDE river valley(4 miles wide places) and you gotta go with the folks that know how to pick their way through the braids to get here.(pst... that's us) Otherwise you may float right on by and never know there was even a couple glaciers here...

One of the windiest spots in Alaska, the confluence of the Chitina and Copper rivers. Where these 2 rivers meet, the Chitina more than doubles the flow of the Copper, sending an impressive 200,000+ cubic feet of water(cfs) flowing down steam towards the Miles and Childs glaciers and Copper River Delta.

And that's that. 5 incredible days on the Upper Chitina River. We had sun, we had drizzle, we had a strong breeze and we had a ton of fun!

We spent some time exploring around the Barnard and Hawkins glaciers. A herd of Bison bid us farewell our last morning before departing camp and we had a little time to fly a kite.

The Upper Chitina checks almost all the boxes. Some great whitewater to start, a couple glaciers that approach the edge of the river, one of the most braided river corridors in the world in one of the most remote landscapes.

And there they go! Gabe and Leo fly out to start rigging for our upper Chitina 5 day river trip! Nik and crew will fly out tomorrow to join them, floating past the Hawkins and Barnard glaciers, negotiating one of the worlds most braided rivers and hoping to spot a few bison along the way.

Truly one of North America's great adventures. If you crave to stand on land that feels like you are the first humans to ever walk there. This trip is right up your alley!

We typically offer 2 trips every year, and no one knows these rivers like McCarthy River Tours does.

Stay tuned for pics post trip!
