Operating as usual

Just in time for the holidays/new year --the perfect gift for a parent or early childhood teacher--Little Buddhas Yoga has released January's Kindness Curriculum: Calming Tools and Techniques for 3-6 Year Olds. This printable curriculum is available for immediate download and includes a month of short, manageable, daily activities for families or classrooms with young children. Activities include yoga, breathwork, games, and crafts.

The Kindness Curriculum is a ten-month curriculum designed for social emotional learning (SEL). While the series is sequential, each month also stands alone. Plant the seeds of empathy, kindness, and compassion in just minutes a day! This month, offer your children the tools to manage anxiety and difficult emotions.

If you would like a copy emailed to you, simply send a donation (we recommend $10-20 and appreciate any donations during this challenging time) to Courtney via Venmo: @courtney-schroeder-9 or PayPal: [email protected]. Be sure to include "January TKC" and the best email address (where we can send your curriculum; if the curriculum is a gift, we can send it to you, or directly to the recipient with a note).

One you've received the material, you'll also be invited to join our private Facebook group for additional videos and support. We are committed to making sure the curriculum is accessible and usable for all families or classrooms, so please stay in touch.

Happy holidays. Much peace, Courtney and Diane

Kidding Around Yoga gave us this idea. Orange You Grateful? Using only feet, pass the orange around. Whoever is holding the orange (using only feet!) says, “orange you grateful for...” and names something they appreciate. Keep going around, passing the orange and naming your gratitude, until you run out of ideas or attention wanes. Great for families. Gratitude is a great daily practice, paired here with stretching, strengthening, and creating flexibility in the feet, plus plus core strength and hip flexibility.

Little Buddhas Yoga's Kindness Curriculum for December is now available to download, theme: Generosity. Designed for families or classrooms with children ages 3-6, each TKC month includes 5 activities per week (most activities take fifteen minutes or less), plus optional add-on activities. Complete the full month or pick and choose what resonates. This month, all the activities --yoga, breathwork, mindfulness, crafting, and circle games-- are themed around Generosity (giving, sharing, cooperation).

To receive your printable copy of December's Kindness Curriculum, please send a donation (we recommend $10-20 and appreciate any support during this challenging time) to Courtney via PayPal: [email protected] or Venmo: courtney-schroeder-9. Be sure to include your best email address and "TKC December" in the notes, so we know where to send the curriculum.

This is part of a ten month sequential curriculum, but each month can stand alone, too. Feel free to request earlier months (Mindful Moments, Feelings Awareness, Gratitude) and look forward to January's Calming Tools and Techniques month.

Once you've downloaded the curriculum, you will be invited to join our private Facebook group for additional videos and support.

Yoga game of the week

Stacking Stones Yoga Stories (for any number of people of all ages)

Prepare by using a sharpie to draw simple story starters on flat stones. Be sure your drawings correspond with yoga poses (be inventive—what yoga pose LOOKS like a cave, a sun, a jewel?). Tuck stones in a bag. First player pulls a stone and tells the first sentence of a story, which must include the picture somehow. For instance, “once upon a time, there was a friendly shark” (take locust pose, hands clasped as the fin—use a strap or towel as needed). All players should do the yoga pose together. Next player draws a stone, stacks it, and tells the next sentence of the story; again everyone takes the yoga posture together. Remind younger players how a narrative arc usually progresses, with some kind of conflict, which eventually ends with resolution. Keep going around and stacking stones and doing asana until the story ends. If a stack becomes precarious, start a second or third stack. Encourage use of breathwork and other calming tools/techniques to help characters resolve conflict

Benefits of integrating yoga with storytelling include listening comprehension, literacy skills, strengthened imagination, creativity, critical thinking, focused attention, flexibility, balance, physical exercise, connection, breathwork, calming techniques, and conflict resolution

Great for yoga class, school classrooms, library storytime, family connection, camping or road trip rest stops...anywhere you have space for a stack of stones and some downward dogs

This is part of a ten month sequential social emotional learning curriculum that runs from Sept-June. Start anytime and choose the monthly themes that resonate. Our past months have included Mindful Moments and Feelings Awareness (pm for more info! If you would like to complete all 10 months, you can tack these two on the end, or start now with Mindful Moments).

Little Buddhas Yoga’s November Kindness Curriculum, Gratitude, is now available to download. What are you grateful for? Research shows a strong link between gratitude and well being, both physical and mental/emotional, but it’s a practice that needs to be cultivated. Download 30 days of gratitude themed yoga, games, stories, crafts, and mindfulness practices that you can easily fit into a busy schedule (you can complete most activities in just minutes a day). Geared toward 3-6 year olds and their families/classrooms.

This is part of our ten month social-emotional learning curriculum, The Kindness Curriculum, so ask about Mindful Moments and Feelings Awareness months, too, if you’re interested! Start anytime and complete the full month as it’s designed, or pick and choose the activities that work for you. It’s all very flexible and we are always available for support. These activities are easily adapted for older siblings and parents/teachers, too, so don’t hesitate to include everyone.

To receive the downloadable curriculum (and access to our private Facebook group where we post videos and share ideas), *send a donation (recommended $10-$20) to Courtney via Venmo: Courtney-Schroeder-9, or PayPal [email protected]. Be sure to include the best email address (to send your materials) and “November TKC” in the comments.*. Once you have the curriculum, you are welcome to join The Kindness Curriculum’s fb group and we also offer a monthly Zoom to go over the materials together.

Meanwhile, enjoy the Gratitude Scavenger Hunt from page 28 of the curriculum!

Mindful Mystery Box: Put any ordinary item in an empty tissue box or a little bag. Absolutely no peeking, your child/ren use their sense of touch to notice how it feels (is it small or big? Squishy or hard? Rough or smooth?) and then guess what it is before pulling it out of the box. The game is in the noticing, the sensory experience, the mindful moment.

Pose of the day: Half handstand. Facing away from the wall, fold forward, bending the knees, and place your hands down about one leg-length from the wall (you can measure this first by sitting against the wall and marking the spot where your heel reaches). Your gaze is now toward the wall. Slowly walk your legs up the wall until your body is making an “L” shape. This inversion is an excellent choice when frustration, sadness, or anxiety are starting to build. Besides offering a (literal) new perspective, this posture promotes balance, dispels fear, invites self confidence, and is physically energizing and active—strengthening shoulders, arms, wrist, core—while also soothing the mind to relieve stress or difficult emotions. Many children crave going upside down, as it helps to regulate and organize the nervous system (great for all ages). Always be sure a grown up is nearby until children are comfortable practicing this posture on their own.

Little Buddhas Yoga’s Feelings Awareness curriculum for 3-6 year olds is available for download! This is part of a ten month sequential Kindness Curriculum, but each month stands alone, too, so choose months that resonate with your family or classroom. This month’s curriculum includes four weeks worth of activities, including printables, art, yoga, and breathwork for social emotional growth.

Plus, we will add you to our Facebook group to connect with others who are following the curriculum. In addition, we offer a mid-month Zoom for those who want to connect, ask questions, and practice some of the material together.

Perfect for anyone involved with children during the early childhood years, the curriculum is flexible, adaptable, and easy to fit within a busy day (most activities take just minutes). Feelings Awareness is an important part of self awareness and self regulation (we must recognize our feelings in order to manage them), as well as foundational to kindness, empathy, and compassion. This is one of the best months to jump in.
