What if trying harder isn’t always the answer? 🧠⚾️

Coach Wags taught the VPA players that very concept with a book from Edward Slingerland called Trying Not to Try. This is a concept every baseball player can relate to:

Sometimes, the harder we try to make something happen, the harder it becomes to actually do it.

Think about insomnia. You’re lying in bed thinking, “I HAVE to fall asleep.” You try harder and harder…and suddenly falling asleep feels impossible.

Baseball can work the same way.

A hitter gets into a slump. He wants a hit so badly that he starts thinking more, pressing more, changing things and trying to force success. The harder he tries to escape the slump, the tighter he becomes — and the further he can get from the natural movement and instincts that made him successful in the first place.

Sometimes the answer isn’t TRY HARDER.

It’s TRUST MORE.

Trust your preparation. Trust your training. Trust your body. Step into the box, compete — and let it flow.

At VPA, developing better baseball players means developing the mind as much as the swing.

More freedom. More adjustability. More pitches you can hit. ⚾️

Today at VPA, Coach Wags broke down the concept of “degrees of freedom” and why it matters for hitters.

Great hitting isn’t about creating one rigid, repeatable swing and hoping the pitch shows up in the perfect spot. It’s about developing a body and swing that can move, adjust and adapt to what the pitcher gives you.

The more degrees of freedom a hitter can effectively control, the more options they have to adjust the barrel — allowing them to cover more of the strike zone and reach more pitches without sacrificing the quality of the swing.

This is what player development at VPA looks like: not just taking swings, but helping athletes understand how and why the body moves to solve the problem of hitting.

🧠 Learn it.
⚾ Train it.
💪 Then let the athlete compete.

Another day. Another opportunity to learn from an expert. ⚾️

Yesterday at VPA, our student-athletes had the opportunity to spend time with Randy Sullivan, MPT, CSCS — physical therapist, baseball coach, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, skill acquisition specialist, and founder of Florida Baseball ARMory.

Randy has spent years helping pitchers develop velocity, command and confidence while prioritizing long-term arm health — and our players had the chance to hear directly from him, ask their own questions, and apply his experience to their development.

That’s an important part of what we’re building at VPA.

We don’t just want our athletes to be told what it takes to reach the next level. We want them to have real conversations with experienced professionals who have spent their careers helping players get there.

Every question is an opportunity to learn.
Every conversation provides a new perspective.
Every connection adds another tool to their toolbox.

🎥 Hear one of our VPA players ask Randy a question — and Randy’s advice — in this clip.

Speed isn’t just something you have—it’s something you can develop.

Our VPA athletes worked with their personal trainer Eric from Focused Physical Development on the mechanics behind getting faster. From proper body position and acceleration mechanics to creating a more explosive first step, small technical adjustments can make a BIG difference.

For a baseball player, speed matters everywhere—beating out a ground ball, stealing a base, taking an extra 90 feet, and shaving valuable time off that 60-yard dash. ⏱️

The goal isn’t simply to tell our athletes to run faster. It’s to teach them HOW to run faster—then train those mechanics until they become natural.

More efficient. More explosive. Faster. 💪💨

Training the body starts with training the mind. 🧠⚾️

Coach Wags introduced the players to concepts from Perception: How Our Bodies Shape Our Minds—and how the connection between what the brain sees, expects, and believes can impact what the body is able to do at the plate.

Then they took the conversation straight to the field with “No Takes, No Foul Balls.” The challenge? Train the mind to believe every pitch is hittable—recognize it, adjust to it, and find a way to put the barrel on it.

This is what development at VPA looks like: learn the why, then put it into action.

Because becoming a better hitter isn’t always about changing your swing. Sometimes, it’s about changing what your brain believes is possible. 🧠➡️⚾️🔥

Competition Friday at VPA! 🏆⚾️🏀🧠

What better way to end a hard-working week than with a little friendly competition?!

The guys battled it out in trivia, bunting, exit velo, launch angle, HORSE, and knockout—putting their baseball skills, brains, and competitive spirit to the test. 😂💪

And yes… the trivia got serious. Do YOU know what the variables in Newton’s Law F = ma stand for?! 🤔😂

A fun way to finish the week, build some camaraderie, and find out who really hates to lose!

Competition Friday is officially a VPA favorite. 🔥

🥩 FIRST WEEK = DONE! 💪⚾️

There’s only one way to celebrate a great first week at VPA… STEAK! 🥩🔥

Our guys put in the work all week — on the field, in the gym, in the classroom, and everywhere in between — so Friday called for a special celebratory steak lunch!

And judging by this picture, they’re working hard AND having a pretty good time doing it. 😂 Max was so committed to refueling that putting the steak down for the picture wasn’t even an option. 🥩🤣

Week 1 is officially in the books! The boys are fueled up, ready to enjoy the weekend, and then it’s right back at it next week!

Great first week, boys! 👊⚾️

REAL QUESTIONS. REAL ACCESS. REAL EXPERIENCE. ⚾️

What does it take to develop into the kind of player who is ready for the next level?

Today, one of our VPA student-athletes had the opportunity to ask that question directly to Doug Mientkiewicz—12-year MLB veteran, Gold Glove winner, Olympic Gold Medalist and World Series Champion.

This is what VPA is all about. Our athletes aren’t just hearing stories from experts—they’re sitting in front of them, asking questions, having conversations and learning from people who have actually lived it.

🎥 Hear Doug’s answer in the video.

These are the experiences that help prepare our athletes for where they want to go next.
