We know mike has been talking about these principles for decades.

Stay focused ladies & gentlemen.

THE 3 MAIN PREDICTORS OF ENDURANCE PERFORMANCE

These are your VO2 Max, Efficiency/Economy, and Lactate Threshold.

Your VO2 Max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise. Over the past few weeks, we’ve discussed this a lot on the podcast. Improving it means improving your heart’s ability to pump blood throughout your body.

Your Efficiency/Economy is your ability to use the least amount of energy to perform the necessary movement. As stated differently, the most movement is for the least energetic cost. A clear example of this is swimming. You can have a world-class VO2 Max (and Lactate Threshold), but if your efficiency in moving through the water is poor, you will be a relatively slow swimmer.

Your Lactate Threshold — the topic of the most recent episode of the podcast — is the exercise intensity at which the blood concentration of lactate starts to increase rapidly. Improving lactate threshold is improving your body’s ability (more specifically, your mitochondria) to produce energy through metabolism, thus allowing you to keep producing energy aerobically. In short, it’s increasing your “race pace” without increasing fatigue.

Be sure to check out the latest episode of Perform with Dr. Andy Galpin where I cover how lactate and metabolism influence performance.

"Dr. Benjamin Levine is a legend in the field of exercise physiology

He ran a study you should know about...

Here's the low-down:

As we age, the heart tends to get smaller and stiffer

This impacts its efficiency, reducing exercise capacity and potentially elevating heart failure risk

But remarkably...

2 years of vigorous exercise in sedentary 50-year-olds reversed some of the heart's age-related structural changes and stiffness by up to 20 years

Meaning... exercise gave these sedentary 50-year-olds hearts akin to those of 30-year-olds

That's the power of exercise

Astonishing, really"
