Hanover Peaches

Thanks to ABC News 8 WRIC for reaching out and sharing our troubles this season. It’s going to be a hard year for a lot of Virginia farmers.

Fruit farmers in Virginia are struggling with a lost crop after freezes in the late spring. One Hanover farm has had to cancel its pick-your-own-fruit season, its only income source.

Good morning everyone. I have some unfortunate news. We will not have a pick-your-own season for peaches or apples this season. We had seven frost and/or freeze nights this spring, and although we battled all spring, the last freeze night in late April damaged enough of the crop to make it impossible to have a pick-your-own season. These last two seasons have been very challenging, but we are still working to keep the orchard healthy, improve our variety selection, and enhance freeze prevention. Although the last two seasons have been tough, overall, we have been able to bring a crop to harvest more years than not.
