And the teaching, the community, the story continues…🌤️
Premier Southern Oregon Yoga School in Medford + Ashland Rasa Center is a confluence of many people and many things.
The quintessential character of our center is based upon the understanding of the Sanskrit word ‘rasa’, which is rich with expressive meanings, such as taste, nectar, essence, divine love. In our daily living, rasa is the cultivation of the senses, the authentic awareness and experience of the pure essence of every moment. It is with that beautiful notion that we at Rasa Center endeavor to bring t

OK Rasa People! We're trying out something new due to the indoor mask mandate and taking things outdoors! This Saturday, August 1st, Matthew Downard's 9AM Flow All will take place across the street at Railroad Park in Ashland.
Please remember to space your mats out at least 6 feet apart, and do wear your mask when you are unable to effectively socially distance while outside. Also, online sign-ups are still required.
Hope to see you there!

MAY TEACHER SPOTLIGHT - ASHLEY SHRADER
Q&A:
Where have you lived?
"We moved here from Washington DC 7 months ago. I lived there for 10 years and prior to that I lived in Florida for 26 years. I spent 6 months volunteering abroad in Lima, Peru in 2009 to help integrate sustainability measures in the Amazon."
Describe a major life moment:
"In 2013, I was hit by a car while riding my bike in Washington DC and ended up in the emergency room. Inspired by all of the healthcare providers I met that day and also forever changed by the vulnerability of being a patient, I subsequently looked into firefighting, paramedic, nursing, and medical school. That short experience was the catalyst to discovering my purpose as a nurse practitioner with an emphasis in functional medicine."
Serious question: What's the weirdest food in your house?
"Well, we eat mostly vegan, but we have about 15 pounds of meat in our fridge/freezer... we recently started our dog on a raw diet."
Finally, who is your dog who's now on a raw diet?
Our rescue GSP, Tabor!
Full bio:
In 2010, I began my yoga journey when a friend recommended Yoga to the People podcasts as a way to exercise while I was volunteering in Lima, Peru. As a former gymnast, I was naturally hooked on the physical practice. When I returned to Washington, D.C. in 2011, I fortuitously discovered Yoga District where my teachers Marie Belle and Mike Graglia inspired me to grow my practice to strengthen and expand my body and mind through asana, pranayama, and meditation. In 2012, after receiving a Yoga Activist Outreach certification, I started to volunteer teach chair yoga at a D.C. women's shelter. When I saw the impact that yoga had on the physical and mental state of these women, I knew it was time to shift my professional endeavors towards a career in health and wellness. In early 2014, I left my job in renewable energy, completed my 200-hour teacher training at Yoga District, and started my nursing education. I have since become a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner and now get to work with patients to improve physical, mental, and spiritual health at a local functional medicine clinic.
My core philosophy is centered on creating balance between the sympathetic (fight/flight) and parasympathetic (rest/digest) nervous systems. Evidence shows we are empowered to reprogram our brains and alter the body's stress response in a healthier way through yoga. My classes are designed to reflect this notion. Classes integrate meditation on movement, sensation, breath, and mind. Deep core work is incorporated through warming standing sequences and optional inversions. Pauses for stillness to observe shifts in the nervous system are offered throughout class. Pranayama (breath work) is frequently included to further harness the power of our parasympathetic response.

Happy Earth Day!
A benefit to staying home has been a pause for our planet Earth to purify the air and water. I invite you to step outside and inhale deeply, knowing that the air is just a bit cleaner than it was 6 weeks ago.
The Earth is such an amazing planet! She certainly deserves her day! Oh, don't forget to exhale!!

APRIL TEACHER SPOTLIGHT - PETER WOLF!!
Peter started his career as a personal trainer for the University of California, Irvine in 2002. Previously he was the Head Coach for the University of Oregon Wushu team (Chinese Martial Arts team). Peter is a graduate from the University of Oregon and the Beijing University of Physical Education.
Peter has personal training certifications from ACSM, AFAA, NASM. Group Exercise certifications from AFAA, EFI Sports Medicine, TRX Suspension Training, Stott Pilates, and Kickboxing from Body Training Systems. Most recently he became a certified instructor in the Flexible Steel system.
Peter began training in Martial Arts at age 9. “I was lucky to begin my training in JKD concepts. This was the art and training philosophy of Bruce Lee. This passion encouraged Peter to begin a self guided Yoga practice at age 10. While Peter enjoyed his Yoga studies, he still possessed a burning zeal for martial arts. As a Freshmen at the U of O he was introduced to Traditional Chinese Martial Arts. This then turned into living and studying in China for 3 years at the Beijing University of Physical Education.
“I became involved in the sport of Chinese Martial Arts called Wushu. I found success particularly in Taijiquan (Tai-Chi). In 2001 I won the national championship in the Chen Taijiquan division. In 2002 and again in 2005 I was the “All Around Internal Champion” of The University of California at Berkeley Chinese Martial Arts Tournament. In 2006 I moved back to Oregon and began teaching Taijiquan.” Today, 30 years from when he first found his way to Martial Arts, and his discovery of yoga, both are still intertwined.
And, in case you are wondering...if you open Peter’s fridge ANY time, you will always find two sticks of Kerigold grass-fed butter. Always!
