Whether you're a seasoned player or just learning the basics, join us for a relaxing evening of chess at Ray Roche Park. Bring your own board and pieces if you have them, or borrow one of our limited sets.
We're excited to welcome Dr. George Chressanthis, better known as "Dr. Chess" to provide some instruction. Dr. Chess, as he is known around Media, has been a chess teacher since the Bobby Fischer era in the early 1970s for 55 years. Growing up in northeast Philly in a chess family, Dr. Chess learned to play at the age of 5 from his father. While he has achieved numerous chess titles at the scholastic, local, state, regional, and national levels over 6 decades of tournaments, his greatest affections are teaching kids to play chess and promoting chess.
Locally, he taught chess for years in the after school program at Media Elementary, to the delight of kids and parents. He regularly teaches chess at the Media Chess Club every Tuesday night. And when traveling abroad across Europe, where clubs exist everywhere and outdoor tables are placed in parks, he delights in playing locals whenever and wherever he can. What is special about chess, no matter the differences among people, chess is a game that unites people. Chess is a game for everyone.
