MEDINA UNIFIED BASKETBALL CAPTURES FIRST SECTIONAL TITLE

The Medina Unified Basketball team completed an undefeated season while capturing a section title by defeating Tonawanda 36-24.

Unlike the first playoff game against Omsted where seven different Mustangs scored, today's contest saw only three Medina players put the ball in the basket.

Medina started slowly, outscoring the Tonawanda Warriors 6-5 in the first quarter. Avion Johnson had four of the six points while Jackson Tuohey scored the other two.

The second quarter saw Medina outscore Tonawanda to double its lead from one point to two. At halftime the Mustangs led 15-13. Avion Johnson scored five points and Xavier Moyer four to account for all of Medina's points.

The third period was all Tonawanda as the Mustangs turned the ball over and continued to shoot poorly. The Warriors won the quarter 9-6 to take a one point 22-21 lead into the fourth. Avion Johnson had four points while Xavier Moyer had two.

The fourth quarter was all Xavier Moyer. Not only did Moyer score nine points to lead Medina to the victory, he also had several rebounds and two key steals. Jackson Tuohey added four points and Avion Johnson two. The Mustangs outscored the Warriors 15-2 in the final stanza to win their first sectional crown.

After the game Xavier Moyer was given the Cross-Trainer Top Competitor Award and Avion Johnson earned the Sportsmanship Award.

The team will be escorted into town by the Medina Fire Department.

The Medina Unified Basketball Team has its last game of the year tomorrow, June 2nd.

The game will be held at Lancaster High School starting at 4:00 (not 5:00 as previously thought). The Mustangs will go up against Tonawanda.

MEDINA UNIFIED BASKETBALL TEAM USES BALANCED ATTACK TO DEFEAT OLMSTED

The Medina Unified Basketball team avenged last year's last-second loss to Frederick Law Olmsted, defeating the Owls 27-12.

Poor shooting by the Mustangs, combined with their tight defense, saw the game became a low-scoring contest.

Medina jumped out to an 8-2 lead after one quarter. Adien Cherry, Avion Johnson, Tatianna Maxon and Xavier Moyer had one basket apiece.

The Mustangs increased their lead by halftime, outscoring Olmsted 6-2 in the second period. Aiden Cherry, Avion Johnson and Jackson Tuohey each scored a basket.

The balanced scoring for Medina continued in the third quarter with Avion Johnson and Steven Secore each getting a bucket. Olmsted scored six points, however, to cut their deficit to 8, trailing 18-10 going into the last quarter.

The Mustangs finished off the Owls by outscoring the visitors 9-2. Avion Johnson led the way with 5 points while Matthew Kennedy and Jackson Tuohey had two each.

For the game Avion Johnson led Medina with 11 points. Aiden Cherry and Jackson Tuohey had four points while Matthew Kennedy, Tatianna Maxon, Xavier Moyer and Steven Secore all had two points

Medina improves to 6-0 for the season. The Mustangs will finish the season at Lancaster High School this Friday, June 2, at 5:00. The opponent has yet to be determined.

MEDINA UNIFIED BASKETBALL TEAM TO HOST PLAYOFF GAME FOR FIRST TIME

The Medina Mustang Unified Basketball team will host the Olmsted Owls in the first round of the C Bracket playoffs. The game will be played at Medina High School on Tuesday, May 30th, starting at 5:00.

Medina brings a 5-0 record into the game. The Mustangs will be seeking revenge as the Owls defeated them in last years playoffs, 40-39, on a last-second bucket.

Medina will close out the 2023 season with a Culminating Championship game at Lancaster High School. The game will be held at 5:00 on Friday, June 2nd. The opponent will be determined after Tuesday's contests.

MEDINA'S UNIFIED BASKETBALL TEAM SLAYS THE DRAGONS TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED

Starting slowly for the second game in a row the Medina Unified Basketball team came from behind to defeat the Pembroke Dragons 31-20.

The first quarter saw the visiting Mustangs miss shot after shot while Pembroke took fewer shots but scored. The home team won the 1st quarter 6-4. Medina's points came from Anthony Harrington and Jackson Tuohey, both with 2.

Pembroke's lead grew to three points during the 2nd quarter, outscoring Medina 10-9. Avion Johnson scored 5 points while Jackson Tuohey had the other 4.

The game turned around in the third quarter. Medina almost doubled their score while holding the Dragons to just two points. The Mustangs totaled 12 with Avion Johnson and Jackson Tuohey both scoring four points. Matthew Kennedy and Xavier Moyer had two apiece. The score after three quarters was Medina 25, Pembroke 18.

The visitors closed out their regular season with six points in the final quarter while the Dragons again scored only two. Aiden Cherry, Steven Secore and Jackson Tuohey had two points each.

For the game Medina was led by Jackson Tuohey with 12 points while Avion Johnson added 9. Aiden Cherry, Anthony Harrington, Matthew Kennedy, Xavier Moyer and Steven Secore had two points each.

Medina finishes the regular season with a 5-0 record and will wait to see who they face in the first round of playoffs.

MEDINA UNIFIED BASKETBALL TEAM DEFEATS AKRON

The Medina Unified Basketball team upped their regular season record to 4-0, defeating the visiting Akron Tigers 32-22.

Akron started quickly out of the gate, jumping to a 6-0 lead and hitting four of their first five shots. The teams played evenly after that with Akron leading Medina 12-6. Avion Johnson had 4 points and Matthew Kennedy 2 for Medina.

The Mustangs continued gaining momentum in the 2nd quarter, outscoring the Tigers 10-6. That tied the score at 16 all at the half. Jackson Tuohey scored 6 points and Avion Johnson 4 for Medina.

Medina then pulled away in the 3rd quarter. Led by Matthew Kennedy's 6 points, the Mustangs led 28-20 going into the final stanza. Russell Brunette, Anthony Harrington and Avion Johnson all added 2 points.

The 4th quarter was a low scoring affair with the Mustangs outscoring the Tigers 4-2. Xavier Moyer had all four points for Medina.

This was the first loss for the Akron Tigers' Unified team this year.

Medina finishes their regular season this coming Monday at Pembroke.
