Happy Labor Day! This annual American holiday pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is observed each year on the first Monday of September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans and is celebrated with cookouts and gatherings.

We take modern working conditions for granted today, but for a 2-minute history lesson about what's been accomplished in the last couple of centuries, check out this video. https://www.history.com/articles/labor-day

BUNCO! Indian River Colony Club has multiple groups that enjoy the fast-paced dice game that relies purely on luck! Players constantly rotate tables, creating a "speed socializing" environment. Each player pays a small entry fee (typically a few dollars) at the start of the game to build the cash prizes. Another reason to love it? Some say bunco parties are 10% game and 90% snacks!

Losers have fun, too.
In Bunco, players hold up the "L" hand gesture as a playful, self-deprecating joke to show they lost the round.

Victory over Japan Day marks the day on which Imperial Japan formally surrendered in World War II, bringing the war to an end on September 2, 1945.The official surrender document was signed aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. The name, V-J Day, was selected by the Allies after they named V-E Day for the victory in Europe.

After the official surrender, the United States began the process of helping to bring Japan back into the international community by strengthening military, political and economic ties, much as it was doing with former foes Italy and Germany. As an important ally, Japan increasingly has participated with the United States and other partners in a number of bilateral and multilateral military exercises and operations, especially since the fall of the Soviet Union. The Japanese government provides nearly $2 billion per year to offset the cost of stationing the 55,000 U.S. forces in 85 facilities across Japan.

September is National Service Dog Month, a time marked to pay tribute to the animals who support Americans dealing with vision impairment, medical issues, mental health, and more. Service dogs are specially trained animals working with people with medical issues as helpers and as therapy, and have special legal protections to allow both dog and owner to be in places where there is otherwise a no animals policy or not pets policy.

There are about 2,500 war and military service dogs in service today, with about 700 serving at any given time overseas. Service dogs are also used to assist former military and non-military individuals suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
