Happy Birthday, Coast Guard Auxiliary! Your history is a little confusing, but your services are invaluable!
When the Coast Guard "Reserve" was authorized by act of Congress on June 23, 1939, the Coast Guard was given a legislative mandate to use civilian volunteers to promote safety on and over the high seas and the nation's navigable waters. The Coast Guard Reserve was then a non-military service comprised of unpaid, volunteer U.S. citizens who owned motorboats or yachts.
Two years later, on Feb. 19, Congress amended the 1939 act with passage of the Auxiliary and Reserve Act of 1941. Passage of this act designated the Reserve as a military branch of the active service, while the civilian volunteers, formerly referred to as the Coast Guard Reserve, became the Auxiliary.

In 1782, the bald eagle was chosen to represent the United States as our national symbol. Since then, interest in our national bird has flourished, and there are now permanent cameras monitoring eagle nests across the country.

Here at Indian River Colony Club, we don’t need surveillance cameras to appreciate them. We have several nests throughout the community that are visible from the ground! These photos were taken by Sherry G. in her backyard, where two bald eagles currently reside.

We hope you enjoy these photos and take a moment to appreciate the eagles near you today in honor of National American Eagle Day.

America’s Flag Day marks the Second Continental Congress’s adoption of the first U.S. national flag on June 14, 1777. The first flag featured the same 13 red and white stripes we see today. However, the number and arrangement of stars have changed as the number of states has increased over the centuries. The current flag has remained the same since 1960.

Enjoy this video, showing how the flag has changed since 1777. https://youtu.be/eWG4pLxlOlc?si=hA3W0V2W88V0NwFR

Join the celebration of the U.S. Army Birthday on June 14 as we remember its creation in 1775. The army originally consisted of volunteer soldiers with roots to the Continental Army — and was formed to fight the Revolutionary War. Today, as the largest branch of the U.S. military, the proud men and women of the U.S. Army continue to provide peace and security for all of us.
