Many of you are aware of an incident involving one of our runners during the Sunday, February 8 Half Marathon. The accident occurred early in the race before, Mile One, when a vehicle unexpectedly crossed over our policed and secured course and into our dedicated runner lane striking one of our runners. It is with deep sadness that we announce that AJ Swann, 74, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, passed away this week due to injuries sustained in the accident. Mr. Swann was an avid and accomplished runner having completed nine marathons, 30 half marathons and scores of 10k and 5k races. He was a previous finisher of our Florida Half Marathon. AJ loved running and the camaraderie he shared with his fellow runners. He will be very much missed by his running friends and race event staffs. Outside of running, AJ was an accomplished golfer, businessman and very much a family man. A celebration of life will be held March 1 in St. Simon’s Island. The accident is an ongoing police investigation, and no more details are available at this time.
