This morning Camp Director Adam was getting Gates Pavilion ready for the Summer and was taken back by the amount of birds he heard. By using the Merlin Bird ID app, which listens to the surroundings and identifies birds by their calls, he was shocked by how many birds were around Camp! Staff Spotlight of the Week: Gus Carrington!

MUD Camp's amazing Music Director, a friend to all, and a regular staff member at our ASCEND Course, Gus has been at Camp for over 2 decades now. Willing to help out whenever and wherever, Gus truly embodies what it means to be a servant leader and caring soul. Thank you Gus for all your years at MUD Camp!

Gus speaks fondly of his time at MUD Camp below:

"Playing music at Mud Camp is a full-circle experience for me. I still have vivid memories of being a timid chipmunk, too shy to sing along to most of the camp songs. Agreeing to lead music at camp for the first time - many many years later - was more than a monumental shift in my life than I realized at the time. I completely cut my teeth as a performing singer by jamming the camp classics – “Lean on Me”, “Lord of the Dance” and “Pharoah Pharaoh” to pavillions full of enthusiastic campers. I owe any “stage prescence” I have anywhere else to those first few summers as music director at St. C!

Even more bewhildering is hearing the young campers repeat and request the songs while walking around various activities during the camp day at St. Columba, and knowing that they first heard these songs because of you - you’ve passed a bit of your own upbringing and uplifting lessons to an entirely new generation (just as once, they were passed down to you). There’s no feeling I’ve felt akin to that. It’s then that you know you’re part of something bigger than yourself, spanning years and years (but at maximum about 4 different chords when all is said and done).

Even as an adult (and arguably increasingly so), the work at Mud Camp reaches the soul. For each complex and confusing off-season year in “the real world,” there’s a chance to unplug, re-focus on the teachings and sermons that guest pastors offer and remind yourself of what truly matters.

I could tell you a story about the day my grandmother left this earth, and how singing along to “Lean on Me” at Gates Pavillion offered me closure in a way nothing else ever could. She had a famous phrase around my family and would say about things she liked that, “there’s nothing else to equal it!” I find it fitting to borrow that line in order to describe what Mud Camp means to me and why St. Columba will always be a place sacred to my heart - there’s truly nothing else (and nowhere else) to equal it!"

A camper favorite, the Waterslide, just got a new addition! Introducing the Camper Cannon! Does the 30 ft tall slide not get the blood pumping enough? Hop in the cannon and get launched into our 4 acre lake 😮 Like this post if you can’t wait to try our new Camp Activity!

Staff Spotlight of the Week: Macy Pearson!

Macy, a senior at Crosstown High, brings infectious energy to every aspect of Camp. Having served as Head Counselor and Extended Care Director, Macy always steps in whenever she is needed and ensures every camper feels welcome! Good luck to Macy as she plans to continue her musical ambitions at the collegiate level!

Reflecting on her time at MUD Camp, Macy says, "MUD Camp is like a second home to me. It's an incredible space to meet and make connections with so many incredible people. Being able to help campers have a wonderful camp experience and creating a community for them is so important and that is what happens at MUD Camp. I love the connection between staff members and how tight knit we are! Not to even mention the beautiful campus we get to be in! If you couldn't tell, I love MUD Camp!"

Staff Spotlight of the Week: Alex Le!

Alex, a Senior at White Station who is starting college at Vanderbilt University in the Fall, has been a counselor, lifeguard, overnight staff, and waterfront director for MUD Camp over the years. Alex brings an infectious smile and great attitude each day to Camp and even helps out with our ropes course in his spare time!

Reflecting on his time at Camp, Alex says "MUD Camp to me is a safe space where anyone can have fun and grow as a person. You get to meet so many new people and can have so much impact on everyone around you. Working at Camp, I love the community we have and how helpful everyone is."
