We are incredibly proud of all of our Zen Dragon competitors who stepped onto the floor and represented our Mercer Island martial arts community this year.

Tournament competition is about so much more than medals. It takes courage to get out there, perform your kata, compete in weapons, step into the sparring ring, and put your training to the test in front of judges, instructors, teammates, friends, and family.

Every competitor gained valuable experience that they can bring back into the dojo as they continue developing their martial arts skills.

Great work to everyone who competed, supported their teammates, and helped make our 2026 karate and martial arts tournament such a memorable event. We are proud of every one of you! 👏🥋

🥋 Tournament Day! 🏆

We had an amazing time competing, learning, and representing Mercer Island at this year’s martial arts tournament!

We’re incredibly proud of all of our Zen Dragon students who stepped onto the mat. Competing takes courage—whether you’re performing kata, testing your skills in sparring, or demonstrating weapons in front of a crowd.

There were wins, challenges, great matches, plenty of smiles, and a lot of lessons we can take back to the dojo. Most importantly, our students supported one another, challenged themselves, and had a ton of fun along the way.

Thank you to all of our students, families, instructors, judges, and fellow martial artists who helped make the tournament such a memorable experience. We’re already excited to get back to training and prepare for the next one! 💪🐉

🥋 Is 3 too young to start martial arts? Are you too old to start?

We hear both.

Parents worry their 3 or 4-year-old is too young for martial arts because they don’t have the focus, coordination, or discipline yet.

But that’s exactly why we start with the basics.

Martial arts for young kids can help develop balance, coordination, listening skills, focus, confidence, and body control—all skills that grow with practice.

And adults often make the opposite assumption: “I’m too old to start martial arts.”

You’re not.

We’ve had martial arts students training into their 70s, 80s, and even 90s. Training doesn’t have to look the same at every age. Martial arts can be adapted to your body, your abilities, and your goals.

Whether you’re 3 or 93, there’s something martial arts can teach you.

The best age to start? The age you are now. 🥋

We had an awesome weekend of martial arts belt testing at Zen Dragon Martial Arts! Our students stepped onto the mat ready to demonstrate their karate and kung fu skills, focus, discipline, confidence, and perseverance.

A special congratulations to our brown belt testers as they continue working toward one of the biggest milestones in martial arts — Black Belt! Every test is another opportunity to push through challenges, demonstrate growth, and take the next step forward.

Should parents let their kids quit an activity when it becomes difficult?

When children struggle in martial arts, sports, or other activities, they may suddenly say they want to quit. But that doesn’t always mean they’ve lost interest—it may mean they’re frustrated, discouraged, or afraid of failing.

Helping children work through challenges teaches perseverance, confidence, discipline, and emotional resilience. Kids don’t learn that they can overcome difficult things by immediately walking away from them. They learn it through encouragement, consistency, and experiencing the pride that comes from making progress.

Sometimes the moment a child wants to quit is the moment they need our support the most.
