These shifts are offered through our working student program where you receive credit towards boarding, horseback riding lessons, or leasing one of our horses. We have 2 nice mares available for lease currently!

Shifts include feeding and watering horses, sweeping, handling horses, cleaning stalls, feeding grain, driving an atv to spread manure, etc. AM shift appx 4-5 hours PM shift appx 2.5 hours (no stalls in pm).

Prefer someone 16 y/o and up (younger with a parent helper is OK), horse handling experience a bonus but also willing to train. This is an outdoor, rain or shine job, so someone who will put the horses first, doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty, and has a good work ethic is what we need. This is a great way to learn how to take care of horses on a larger scale which you can carry into future horsemanship or horse ownership.

How we talk to and about our horses is so important. A lot of the negative meanings we assign to their behavior are our own projections. Horses don’t work that way 🖤

🐴 “Naughty.” “Stubborn.” “Rude.” They might seem like harmless words, but could they actually change how we treat horses?

At the ISES 2026 Conference, Susie Catherall Ostler presented “Words matter: The prevalence and impact of negative emotive language in the equine industry.”

In a survey of 355 participants, every participant had heard negative emotive language used to describe horse behaviour, and 97% admitted using it themselves.

But the most striking finding was what happened when researchers changed only the language used to describe a horse’s behaviour. Participants shown descriptions using negative emotive language were significantly more likely to suggest sedation and, in some scenarios, positive punishment, despite seeing the exact same video of the horse.

People who reported using this type of language more frequently were also less likely to suggest giving the horse time, considering their emotional state or physical discomfort, or using desensitisation.

The takeaway is simple but powerful: the words we use can shape the decisions we make.

Instead of labelling a horse as naughty, stubborn or rude, asking why they are behaving that way could lead us towards more horse centred responses.

WHY SOME OF THE BEST HORSE TRAINERS SEEM DISTANT...

It isn't that your horse trainer doesn't like you.

Some of the best trainers and competitors in the horse industry are introverts. For many of us, that's how our connection with horses started in the first place.

While a lot of people grew up learning how to fit in, seek approval, and they learned how to thrive in crowds... many of the future trainers found peace in a barn, a pasture, or on the back of a horse. Horses became the place where life made sense to them.

The truth is... Most trainers don't get burned out from training horses. They get burned out from people.

They get burned out on the nonstop constant phone calls. The messages. The expectations. The pressure. The difficult conversations. The emotional weight that comes with serving the public.

And those competitors who sometimes seem stuck-up? Many of them aren't arrogant at all. They're simply people who recharge in solitude instead of crowds.

The trainers and competitors who stay in this industry for years usually learn how to manage that part of themselves. They learn when to socialize, when to serve, and when they need to step away long enough to reset.

So if your trainer goes quiet for a while... or that competitor you've always admired disappears for a few days...

Don't automatically assume they're upset with you. They may simply be doing what they have to do to protect their own mental energy so they can come back and give their best to their horses, their clients, and the people who depend on them.

This is a topic that barely gets talked about at all in our industry...

So here's an honest question for y'all. ..

How many of you are introverts, and how many of you feel more drained by people than by spending a full day with horses?

With having Cystic Fibrosis, the air quality is something I am consistently monitoring. The Treasure Valley is experiencing some of the worst air quality we have had in years- If you or a loved one has asthma, COPD, etc. or if your horse has heaves or other breathing conditions, you are likely well aware how poor air quality impacts our quality breathing at times like this. If you are healthy or have never lived somewhere where wildfire smoke is a factor, there’s a chance you’ve never even considered making adjustments in care due to air quality. So in light of all of this I wanted to remind everyone to keep an eye on the conditions for the health and safety of themselves and their horses and adjust where needed.

I keep a link year round to an article covering horses and wildfire smoke in my instagram bio, as well as a link to a government website to check the air quality (I find the weather apps not as reliable).

Check air quality daily and adjust lesson, training, and individual care programs as needed! 🫶🏼

When it’s safe enough to do so, here’s some ideas of low exertion activities you can do whether it’s with your lesson students, training horses, or your own personal horses ⬇️

•off-horse exercises that focus on balance and position
•tack cleaning 🧼
•stall cleaning and general non-riding horse care
•horse spa day 🧼
•bareback ride- walking exercises only
•walking + lateral movement basic under saddle sessions when safe to do so
•basic horse stretches like carrot stretches etc
•search YouTube for fun and simple liberty tricks you can learn with your horse
•research day @ your local library on other things you can add to your program! ✨

The CARE of your horse should always be your top priority, especially in times like these. Most horses do not care if they are ridden or not, and poor air quality seldom lasts very long. Make sure they are getting adequate forage (thanks Josh Norris ) and hydration is key. There is lots of good info out there about how to do so, so I encourage you to do your research.
