WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CALL 911…AND NO ONE ANSWERS?

We tend to think of emergencies in a very simple way:

Something goes wrong → call 911 → help is coming.

But what happens when the system you are relying on isn't available?

New York City has experienced multiple incidents where the 911 system has gone down, leaving people unable to reach emergency services. In one recent incident, the outage lasted for nearly eight hours.

This isn't about fear. And it certainly isn't about suggesting that people shouldn't call 911.

It's about understanding reality.

When a serious medical emergency, traumatic injury, or violent incident happens, the first few minutes can matter enormously. Sometimes professional help is minutes away. Sometimes circumstances delay that help. And sometimes, as we've seen, the system itself can fail.

That's why we believe everyone should have at least some basic first-responder skills.

Knowing how to recognize and control life-threatening bleeding.

Knowing what to do when someone is seriously injured.

Knowing CPR and how to use an AED.

Knowing how to respond instead of panic.

And understanding defensive skills, situational awareness, avoidance and de-escalation.

You don't need to be a police officer, paramedic, or tactical professional to learn these skills.

Sometimes, you may be the person who has to act first.
