Our Story

We are a “Budo” Martial Art Association (Black-Belt Fraternity). Members of our regional Yudanshakai are affiliated with Steve Scott’s National (U.S.A.) Judo Black-Belt Association (JBBA), John Saylor’s ShinGiTai Jujitsu Association and the Amateur Athletic Union (A.A.U.). We represent members from beginner introduction (White-Belt) to Black-Belt graduation in Arizona and the surrounding region.

“Freestyle Judo” is a set of contest rules written by Steve Scott. He hopes preserve the full curriculum of Kodokan Judo as developed by the founder of Judo, Jigoro Kano. “Kano Jujutsu”, later renamed “Judo” by the Founder, was the predecessor, if not inspiration, for both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (IBJJF) and IJF (Olympic) Judo. Judo also greatly influenced Sambo. Freestyle Judo is NOT a new “style” of Judo. It is just the kind of Judo your Sensei used to do.

“ShinGiTai Jujitsu” is a Martial Art Association started by John Saylor in 1987 that includes striking, clinching, throws and take-downs, grappling and submission. As Sensei Saylor likes to say, “we were cross-training before MMA was cool.” ShinGiTai is much more than the sum of its parts, however. It is a philosophical concept that was central to the way a Samurai was to conduct their life. “Shin” represents the mental aspects and a warrior’s “heart”. “Gi” represents technical skill and diligence in study. And “Tai” represents the importance of physical and mental health. These three pillars are central to the making of a warrior with “Samurai Spirit”.

Finally, “Budo” is a Japanese term which means “Warrior Way”. “Do” in Japanese and Korean, Tao in Chinese, means “the way”, as in a “way of life”. The purpose of our association is to live life, individually, according to the “Do” and foster a fraternal community in support of that mission.
