We have a section of society which devalues our world. A side which sees gyms as dens of vanity and superficial people. These people are the driving force behind gym closures.

We don’t do ourselves a lot of favours by behaving in our media in ways which reinforce their stereotyping. We still need to humanize the everyday people who sue gyms for their emotional well being and efforts to improve physical health.

It’s also completely valid to want to look and feel better. To look great naked. It’s one of the most basic human desires and it’s valid. It may not help us much in the battle to get gyms reopen so it might be a card less played temporarily. But in the grand scheme of our world it matters.

For many people the goals of better mental health and looking great run concurrently. They’re not mutually exclusive. Feeling good in your own skin is great for confidence. If this helps you navigate relationships and find more happiness within one, this can be powerful for mental health. We should strive to find happiness within ourselves and be kind to ourselves regardless of our physical appearance, but we know for many taking control of the effort and outcome can be a powerful means to better emotional well being. And this is not just ok, but has a wide array of physical and mental benefits.

Your goals and reason for training are valid. The people who denigrate our world for its vanity component or who belittle our emphasis on mental health are themselves judgemental and negative.
