Part II of the Howie Smith Acorn Report: acorns on the ground, corn feeders still active, drastic reduction in protein consumption (thank goodness) and a lame food plot so far. I did see some coming up in a second location while I was lost trying to find my way back home.

In related news, saw several dead bucks on the road last weekend, and they’re starting to spar around these parts. Love is in the air!

Staying out of the woods, weekend 3. Made it down to the coast today to do a little fishing with my long time buddy Scott. Loaded up some “misfits” to burn while I am here but I have two things working against me at the moment. 1. A steady 12mph wind gusting to 15mph, which is great for keeping the skeeters down but not so good for a controlled fire. 2. IF the winds die down this evening, I won’t be able to be outside anymore because of the skeeters. So Imma work on emptying this ice chest.

It is officially smokin’ jacket weather! Wind’s a’whoopin too, so I am sure some of the acorns will start to come down. Cheers y’all! It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

The feeders are full and the plots are planted. All the planning, the sweat, and the work must come to an end. Sometimes the best way to stay out of the woods ahead of hunting season is to stay out of the woods ahead of hunting season. Be creative.

This is the time of year my ol buddy Howie would call and chat me up about the acorn crop. While I was out finishing up food plots this morning I paid better attention to what’s going on with the acorns right now. The official Howie Smith Memorial Acorn Report is as follows. Post Oaks have little to none. Red Oak acorns are plentiful. So once the acorn drop happens, I’ll be focusing on areas that have the most Red Oaks. Miss you buddy!
