Marcus Freeman’s Journey to Notre Dame Head Coach

Marcus Louis Freeman, born on January 10, 1986, in Huber Heights, Ohio, has risen from a standout college linebacker to the 30th head football coach at the University of Notre Dame through hard work, adaptability, and a deep passion for the game.

Freeman played linebacker for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2004 to 2008, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors twice. Selected in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, his playing career ended prematurely due to an enlarged heart diagnosis. This setback redirected him toward coaching.

In 2010, Freeman returned to Ohio State as a graduate assistant, contributing to a 12-1 season and Sugar Bowl victory. He then built his resume with the following roles:

•Linebackers coach at Kent State (2011–2012)

•Linebackers coach and later co-defensive coordinator at Purdue (2013–2016)

•Defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Cincinnati (2017–2020) under former Ohio State defensive coach Luke Fickell.

At Cincinnati, Freeman helped transform the Bearcats into a powerhouse, showcasing his recruiting and defensive expertise.

In January 2021, Notre Dame hired Freeman as its defensive coordinator and linebackers coach under Brian Kelly. His impact was immediate, helping the Irish reach the College Football Playoff. When Kelly departed for LSU during the 2021 season prior to the teams bowl game, Notre Dame turned to Freeman. Starting what would be called "The Freeman Era" On December 3, 2021, at age 35, he was named head coach the youngest in major college football at the time.

Freeman’s promotion energized the roster and fanbase. He emphasized culture, player development, and Notre Dame’s values, quickly leading the program to consistent success, including strong recruiting classes, bowl victories, and a College Football Playoff appearance. By 2025–2026, his teams had compiled an impressive record, solidifying his reputation as a rising star.

From Ohio high school fields to the sidelines of Notre Dame Stadium, Marcus Freeman’s path reflects resilience and rapid ascent. His journey embodies the American football dream! Turning obstacles into opportunities and proving that leadership, preparation, and heart can elevate one to the pinnacle of the sport.

I can’t wait to see the future of Notre Dame Football under Coach Marcus Freeman. He’s a players coach that takes pride and passion in his role as the head coach. He truly cares about his players, staff, and family. He’s not a what can you do for me person, he is a how can I help you person. That’s truly what it means to represent the University Of Notre Dame as well as being a great leader!

Go Irish, Thank You For Everything Coach ☘️💙
