Thinking about your first pair of climbing shoes? Here's a quick primer on "downturn."

Climbing shoes can be broadly categorized three ways: neutral, moderate, or aggressive.

While technically you could map these to "beginner, intermediate, or advanced," these three categories are really about the level of overhang of the wall you're climbing.

An aggressive shoe - like the SCARPA Drago XT - points the toes downward and forces flexion of the foot to make it easier to maintain the tension needed to keep pressure on footholds while you're under an overhanging section, like the roof of our Lead Wall the Wave or underside of the Bulge on our Boulder Island, or our Cave ceilings.

Moderate shoes - like the La Sportiva Kubo - are designed for slighter overhangs, but many people purchase them as all-arounds that are fine for slabs, but will at least help on a roof.

A neutral shoe - like the Five Ten Kirigami - doesn't have much downturn at all, and is what you'll be most accustomed to as someone who is currently renting. These are best suited for slabs - totally vertical walls, or even walls that lean away from you.
