Welcome to Swim 102β€”where we take a look at the actual anatomy of your freestyle stroke.

Instead of viewing it as one continuous movement, we slice it into five distinct phases: the entry, the reach, the catch, the finish, and the recovery.

By isolating these with targeted drills, we can fix the dead spots in your timing. The ultimate goal? Make your body as long as possible in the water. (I even use a custom-made alignment stick with my athletes to drill this in!) The longer your silhouette, the faster you glide.

πŸ“Š How often should you actually practice?
For Triathletes: Lock in at least 2 pool sessions and 1 open water swim every single week. (No open water nearby? Make it 3 pool swims) .
For Pure Open Water Events: You’ll want to ramp that volume up to 4–6 sessions weekly.

This exact framework has helped thousands of athletes transition from casual pool swimmers to crushing full Ironmans and double-digit mileage events over the last 30 years.

Here’s a reality check: as human beings, our bodies are naturally wired for land. We spend our whole lives bending our knees to walk, run, and move.

So when you jump in the pool and try to swim, those exact habits can actually work against you.
In part two of the progression, we fix the next two crucial pillars:

πŸ”Ή Water Balance: Think of it as letting the water carry your weight evenly from your fingertips down to your toes. If you aren’t floating high at the surface, you’re dragging an anchor behind you.
πŸ”Ή The Propulsive Kick: Because of our natural movement patterns, you literally have to retrain your brain to keep your legs long and your ankles flexible. A hyper-efficient kick is a massive performance booster.

Once you stop fighting your own anatomy and master these pieces, everything else falls into place.

Meet our Rockstar Athlete ⭐️ Hilda Lopez.

Two years ago, Hilda almost gave up on her dream of completing the legendary Cancun to Isla Mujeres open water swim.

At 42, she was struggling with her health, in and out of the hospital, taking medications daily, and feeling disconnected from fitness and herself.

But instead of quitting, she committed to the process.

Fast forward to today πŸ‘‡

🏊 Completed the 10K El Cruce swim
🏊 Finished the 8-mile Alligator Lighthouse swim
πŸƒ Became a triathlete
πŸ”₯ Lost 65 pounds
πŸ’Š Got off ALL medications

And now? She’s training for a 12-mile swim around Key West and preparing for the English Channel.

Not through perfection. Through consistency.

We are SO proud of you, Hilda ❀️

STOP surviving the swim 🏊

One of Coach Erinne’s favorite swim drills for triathletes?
The KRLS drill.
Kick β†’ Right arm β†’ Left arm β†’ Swim

This drill helps improve:
βœ”οΈ Timing
βœ”οΈ Rotation
βœ”οΈ Breathing position
βœ”οΈ Body awareness in the water

One of the biggest takeaways from this drill:
β€œLeave your leading arm extended until you finish breathing.”
Breaking the stroke down piece by piece helps build a smoother, more efficient freestyle when it all comes together.

Try adding KRLS into your next warm-up set and let us know how it feels πŸ‘‡

Want to actually enjoy your next open water or triathlon swim instead of just trying to get through it? πŸŠβ€β™€οΈβœ¨

After nearly three decades of coaching athletes, I compiled everything I know into a system called Swim Essentials. The biggest takeaway? You can't skip steps. It's a completely progressive system, and it worksβ€”but only if you build the house from the foundation up.

We always kick things off with the absolute basics:
1️⃣ Mobility & Power: If your shoulders and thoracic spine are too tight to hold a crisp, streamlined position overhead, you're going to fight your balance the entire time. You need flexibility just to sit right in the water, and strength to maintain it.
2️⃣ Breathwork: This is your bedrock. If your breathing isn't relaxed and controlled, your endurance plummets after just a single lap.

Mastering this takes deliberate practice, but it changes everything.

πŸ‘‡ What feels harder for you: holding a tight body line or keeping your breathing steady? Let me know below!

πŸ”— Want to practice this in person?
Check out our upcoming swim clinics + open water events in the linktree β€” we work on ALL of these skills step by step.

Morning swim sessions hit differently when you’re properly fueled 🏊πŸ’₯

One of the biggest mistakes swimmers make?
Showing up to practice underfueled and expecting quality performance. You don’t need a huge meal before an early swim β€” just simple, easy-to-digest fuel that gives your body energy to perform.

βœ… Hydrate early
βœ… Eat light carbs before practice
βœ… Stick to foods you know work for you

Better fuel = better energy, stronger technique, and more productive swim sessions.
Small habits. Big difference.

What’s YOUR go-to pre-swim snack? πŸ‘‡
