Who truly deserves to be called the GOAT of taekwondo?

Most historical rankings rely on opinions, expert panels or simple medal counts.

At SportsEdTV, we wanted to go further.

We developed the World Taekwondo Historical Performance Index (WT-HPI), a mathematical model designed to compare athletes across generations.

Our research evaluated 83 athletes, examining Olympic and World Championship results, career longevity, consistency, Grand Prix, Grand Slams, World Cups and continental achievements.

But we also addressed one of the biggest challenges in sports history: athletes from different generations did not have the same competitive opportunities.

We reconstructed historical competition records, applied consistent scoring criteria and tested the rankings through 100,000 simulations to understand how sensitive the results are to different assumptions.

The result? 🇺🇸 Steven Lopez ranks #1, followed by 🇮🇷 Hadi Saei and 🇹🇷 Bahri Tanrıkulu.

Does this settle the GOAT debate? Of course not.

Our goal is not to eliminate debate, but to replace unsupported opinions with evidence, transparent criteria and a methodology anyone can challenge.

Now we’d love to hear from the taekwondo community:

Who is missing from our Top 20, and who would you remove to make room?

The 10 Greatest Men’s Taekwondo Athletes of All Time — ranked by data, not opinion. 🥋

There are plenty of GOAT lists. Most rely on opinions or simply count Olympic and World Championship medals.

We wanted to go further.

SportsEdTV built the World Taekwondo Historical Performance Index (WT-HPI) and analyzed 82 of the greatest male athletes, using results through the 2025 World Championships.

The model considers Olympic and World medals, longevity, performance across Olympic cycles, World Cups, Grand Prix, Grand Slams and major continental events.

It also addresses one of the hardest problems when comparing generations: athletes from different eras did not have the same competitive opportunities.

Then we challenged our own model, reconstructed historical careers and ran 100,000 simulations to test how the rankings respond when key assumptions and weightings change.

This isn’t designed to end the GOAT debate. It is designed to make it more objective, transparent and open to challenge.

After all of that, Steven Lopez emerges as the #1 men’s taekwondo athlete in our historical index.

The methodology is open for everyone to examine and question.

Who is missing from this Top 10 according to you — and who would you take out to make room?

Most « how strong are you » charts floating around online are guesswork dressed up as data — round numbers with no source, applied the same way to a 22-year-old and a 65-year-old.

We wanted something better, so we built this one from actual research: van den Hoek et al. (2024), a peer-reviewed study of 809,986 tracked powerlifting entries. Instead of one-size-fits-all weight thresholds, we scaled it to bodyweight and broke it down by age bracket — because strength naturally shifts as you get older, and a fair benchmark should account for that instead of pretending it doesn’t happen.

Find your age bracket. Find your bodyweight multiple. See where you actually rank.

Build strength at any age. 💪
