From a backyard game to a global sport 🏓

Pickleball was created in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington by three dads—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum—just trying to entertain their kids. With simple paddles, a plastic ball, and a badminton court, the game was born.

But where did the name come from? 🤔
There are two stories:
• One says it was named after the Pritchards’ dog, Pickles, who loved chasing the ball.
• The other says it came from “pickle boat” in rowing—where leftover players are mixed together, just like the sport’s mix of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.

Either way, the name stuck—and so did the fun.

Easy to learn, social, and for all ages, pickleball continues to grow around the world.
