One of the COOLEST moments from this past weekend that might have gone unnoticed.

Obviously, our JPI Meet is named from Jack Pettinger who was most known for his time as the UW Madison Coach. But before his time at UW, Jack coached with the legendary Doc Councilman at Indiana. One of their top swimmers was Madison’s own Jim Montgomery.

Montgomery was an incredibly accomplished swimmer, but is best known for winning the gold medal in the 100
free in 1976 at the Montreal Olympics. His performance was pretty famous at the time as he became the first ever to break 50 seconds, setting the world record with a 49.99.

In a rare moment of cosmic alignment, Luukas Vainio from won the Men’s 100 Freestyle event in…49.99

Almost 50 years to the month after Montgomery sets his world record,
A Badger swimmer
Competing in Montgomery’s hometown
At a meet named after his coach
Ties his most famous time, down to the hundredth

Honestly, Jack would have loved it 😍
