My son and I took the Jon boat out on Ninigret Pond RI. As the sun was setting behind the trees Rogan hooked up on a 43” beast. He was casting live eels. After that we did a little live eel trolling, around 8:15, and that’s when I hooked up on a 44” bass. The eels were from Breachway Bait & Tackle. The kid behind the counter said night would get us some biggies and he wasn’t kidding. Both were caught near Marsh Point. Tight lines everyone.

Good job on this shooters part. But, understand the Tueller drill merely a metric. If you can shoot a target that is 21 feet away in 1.5 seconds awesome, but it doesn’t make you safe, there is nothing safe about being 21 feet away from a person running at you with a knife or bat or crowbar. The more reactionary gap you have the better. Putting an object between you and a threat is even better. Best is not being there. Also 21 feet does not mean a threat won’t be able to continue his attack and make contact with you causing you harm.  This drill like most other drills is just a metric.

Carrying a handgun lawfully is not reasonable suspicion of a crime. That is the message from a unanimous Maryland appeals-court ruling in Hicks v. State, where police saw a handgun printing under a man’s shirt, handcuffed him, seized his gun, and searched further, even after he said he had a valid carry permit. The court ruled the stop violated the Fourth Amendment because carrying a fi***rm in public for self-defense is presumptively lawful after Bruen; police need specific facts suggesting illegal possession or other criminal conduct, not just the sight of a gun.

That does not mean a carrier should treat an encounter casually. If an officer has an independent legal reason to stop someone, officers may still conduct a limited pat-down for weapons when they reasonably believe the person is armed and dangerous. The rule is that a gun alone is not a crime, and a frisk is not permission for a general search through pockets, bags, or vehicles.

For armed citizens, the practical takeaway is simple: stay calm, keep your hands visible, do not reach for your permit or fi***rm unless instructed, and clearly ask whether you are being detained or free to leave. Your Second Amendment right to carry and your Fourth Amendment protection against an unjustified stop are not competing rights, they work together.

Good read

Stand-your-ground laws are widely misunderstood and Hollywood has helped make it worse. They do not give you permission to use force because someone annoys you, trespasses, insults you, or refuses to leave. They do not turn a heated argument into a self-defense case. What they do is much narrower: if you are lawfully present and otherwise justified in using force, the law may remove a duty to retreat before defending yourself.

The legal requirements for self-defense still apply. You generally must not be the aggressor, the threat must be imminent, the force you use must be proportional, and your actions must be reasonable under the circumstances. A stand-your-ground statute only affects the retreat question. It does not erase the rest of the test, and it does not protect someone who provokes, escalates, or goes looking for a confrontation.

Escaping may still be the smartest tactical choice, even where you have no legal duty to retreat. Self-defense is never about winning an argument or “standing your ground” out of pride. It is about stopping an immediate, unlawful threat when there is no safer reasonable option.
