Safety First, Skills Forever

05/21/2026

Four months ago, this little guy started exactly where so many children do… unsure, dependent, and needing full support in the water.

Today, fully clothed, he can independently recover, float, breathe, and keep himself safe. That is the goal. Not tricks. Not “water acclimation.” Real, practiced survival skills.

And before the comments come saying, “That baby is uncomfortable, how could you do that to your child?” let’s talk honestly about the alternative.

The alternative is panic in real water.
The alternative is no practiced response.
The alternative is drowning.

Children do not magically know what to do in an emergency. Survival skills have to be taught, practiced, and repeated until they become automatic. Yes, learning hard things can involve frustration, effort, and moments of discomfort- just like car seats, life jackets, holding a hand in a parking lot, or teaching a child not to run into the street. Safety is not always comfortable in the moment, but it matters anyway.

We teach children how to respond when they are tired, surprised, disoriented, or fully clothed because that is how real accidents happen. And the outcome we are after is not a smiling lesson video, it is a child who can fall in the water and survive.

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for young children, particularly for children ages 1–4, and boys consistently make up the majority of pediatric drowning victims every single year. Boys account for roughly 80% of drowning fatalities in children under 5, which is why we take survival swim skills so seriously. Water does not care if a child is smart, athletic, loved, or closely supervised.

Summer is here. Lakes, pools, vacations, boat days, and backyard swimming happen fast, and drowning is often silent, quick, and unexpected. The hardest conversations we have every year are with families who say, “We meant to sign up sooner.”

Please don’t wait until it feels urgent.

Our schedule fills months in advance because we keep lessons one-on-one and outcomes-focused. If you are even thinking about lessons for your child, now is the time to join the waitlist.

Because when an emergency happens, your child will not rise to the occasion — they will fall back on what they have practiced.

And that practice can save a life.

So thankful to Logan for having me on to share my heart, and talk about all of the exciting things happening at our school and with Schieber Swim Foundation!

Can your child safely exit a pool after falling in? That’s the topic of conversation today with Abbi from Schieber Swim School 2.0 and the Schieber Swim Foundation today. Good stuff! Stay tuned…

For the past 7 years, I’ve tracked outcomes across 4,000+ swimmers in our program, using our Foundations First method.

Here’s what that data actually shows (based on averages from June 2019-March 2026. Every child is different, but numbers don't lie).

Ages 3 and up:

Most children are able to roll onto their back and maintain an independent float in just 5 weeks

Most children are able to recover from an unexpected fall into the water (roll + float + breathe) in 9 weeks

97% of swimmers leave able to get themselves to safety without assistance

Children ages 3+ are reaching these survival skills in as little as 6 weeks

Under age 3:

Infants are able to maintain an independent back float (10+ seconds) in 5 weeks

They are learning to roll into a back float and remain calm while breathing in 11 weeks

93% are demonstrating intentional safety responses in the water—not panic

This is not guesswork.
This is tracked, measurable progress across thousands of lessons.

Here’s the reality most parents don’t hear:

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4.

And it doesn’t happen because a child “can’t swim laps.”

It happens because they don’t know what to do when they fall in unexpectedly.

We do things differently.

We teach children how to:
• Roll onto their back immediately
• Stay calm and breathe
• Maintain a float until help arrives
• Recover from a fall into the water

Not just how to move through the water—
but how to survive it.

Summer is coming fast.
Pools are opening.
This is your window.

If your child cannot:
• Get to their back on their own
• Stay floating without help
• Recover after an unexpected fall

They are not water safe.

We officially kicked off our fundraiser today and I wanted to personally invite our swim families (and those who have been thinking about joining us) to be part of it 💙

This is honestly one of the best ways to make lessons more affordable while also doing something really meaningful.

🍕 You sell pizza kits (they ship directly—super easy)
💙 50% goes toward YOUR child’s lessons
💙 50% helps fund lessons for another child through our foundation

If cost has ever been a hesitation, this is such a great way to offset it.

And if your child is already enrolled—this is your chance to give another family access to the same life-saving skills your child is learning.

We talk a lot about water safety, but this is how we actually expand access and make an impact beyond our own families.

If you want to participate, message me and I’ll get you set up!

Let’s make lessons happen for more kids 💙

If your child fell into water today… would they know what to do?

I ask this every spring, because summer comes fast—and most kids are not truly water safe yet.

That’s exactly why we created our Foundations First Swim Series—a focused 8-week program designed to teach real self-rescue skills.

This is not play-based swim lessons.
This is about giving your child the skills to save themselves.

📅 Starts April 8th
👶 Ages 4, 5, & 6

Spots will fill quickly.

Message me if you want details 💙

Foundations First Swim Series – A Few Spots Still Open!

We’re kicking off our new Foundations First Swim Series on April 1, and we still have a couple of spots available in each age group.

This 8-week series is designed to help kids build the foundational skills that actually make them safe in the water. Instead of spending years in lessons without real independence, this program focuses on the skills that matter most first — things like floating independently, breath control, recovering to air after entry, and learning how to move to the wall and exit safely.

The goal is simple: help kids develop real water safety skills and confidence before summer arrives.

For years, I watched children pass swim levels without becoming truly water safe.

That never sat right with me.

Foundations First Swim Framework™ was built from thousands of lessons, years of data tracking, and one simple belief:

We do not move children through levels.
We build safe, independent swimmers.

This curriculum is survival-first, progression-driven, and rooted in measurable benchmarks — not assumptions.

Now, we are taking the next step.

We are beginning locally, implementing Foundations First in structured group settings, with the goal of raising the standard of swim instruction — first in Midland, then beyond.

We also launched the Schieber Swim Foundation because water safety should never depend on income.

Every child deserves access to quality, lifesaving instruction.

Drowning is 100% preventable.

This is bigger than swim lessons.
This is a standard shift.

If you believe in raising the bar for water safety, we’re just getting started.

💙 Why Starting in January Matters
Drowning is a year-round risk, not just a summer one. Starting swim lessons in January gives children time to build real, repeatable self-rescue skills, develop calm and confident responses around water, practice in a focused and low-pressure environment, and enter spring and summer already prepared rather than just beginning.

⚠️ Waiting until summer often means children are learning these skills while they are already around pools, lakes, and open water. Starting now means safety comes first.

📲 If swim lessons are something you’ve been meaning to prioritize, January is one of the best times to begin. Message us or claim a spot while these times are available.
