Fish Fact Friday!
The Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush) is a native cold-water fish found in Michigan’s Great Lakes and inland waters. Once abundant, their populations declined due to overfishing and invasive species but have rebounded thanks to conservation efforts. These deep-water predators can grow over 40 inches long and weigh more than 50 pounds, making them a prized catch for anglers. The largest Lake Trout ever recorded in Michigan weighed 61.5 pounds and was caught in Lake Superior in 1997! Recognizable by their speckled bodies and forked tails, Lake Trout thrive in cold, oxygen-rich waters and remain a favorite among sport fishers and conservationists alike.
