Did you know that the Watusi—also known as Ankole-Watusi—is a striking breed of domestic cattle originally from East Africa, most famously associated with the Ankole people of Uganda and Rwanda.

Ankole cattle have been herded for more than 2,000 years in the Great Lakes region of Africa. The Watusi name comes from the Tutsi (Watusi) people of Rwanda, who historically bred them for both prestige and practical uses. The breed was brought to the United States in the 1960s, where selective breeding produced the modern Ankole-Watusi known for their extraordinary horns. They’ve been nicknamed “the cattle of kings” for their regal stature and cultural reverence.

This gal here and her family are way up on my list of favorite people in the world. My God Daughter has a super busy schedule being in high school and showing animals all over west Texas when she isn’t working at the family business. Second to last day of season we were finally able to spend some time together in the field. She spotted this buck twice before we were able to make a short stalk and a long wait for him to clear the brush for a shot. The does and young bucks he was with came to us out of curiosity and ended up at 20 yards. We had to wait for them to get out of the way to get a shot on this old bo**er who knew something wasn’t quite right and stayed in the thick stuff. He stepped into a tiny window and she rest is history! Congrats baby girl. We love you so much. Turkey season is coming soon. Pencil me in for some time in your busy schedule!
