It’s with a heavy heart that I share that my family and I are relocating to south Florida, so I will no longer be able to offer swim instruction to the greater Richmond area. The last 3 years have been incredibly fulfilling. I have worked with so many wonderful families who I will miss dearly. To my swim families- Thank you all for your support and if you are ever in the Fort Lauderdale area you better reach out! I’m going to miss all my babies so much!

Its that times of year for bathing suit shopping. Neons are in! Skip the blues and greens and go for the bright colored suits. You want to be able to spot your kids instantly, not have them blend in with the water.

Find your Float Friday! Now this right here is a thing of beauty! Full air security in their float. When children are young they do not have the strength to support their weight and access air through treading water. At ISR we teach children as young as 6 month to 6 years to find air and security through rotating to a float. As they grow, they learn to swim, rotate, float, and swim again. The skills grow as they grow.

You don't live near water, so your kids are safe from drowning, right? WRONG! Most parents don't realize that there are dangers in their own home. Children under the age of 1 are more likely to down in bathtubs, buckets, and toilets. We want our children to enjoy bath time and have fun, but there are precautions we should all take. 🛁
1. Always supervise your child. Don't throw that load of laundry in or grab that phone for a second. Distractions come in all shapes and sizes. What feels like a second can turn into minutes that your child doesn't have.
2. Fill the tub with 1-2 inches of water. Plenty of water to play in while minimizing the risk for your child.
3.Make sure you have an anti-slip mat in your tub.
4. Enroll your child in ISR. You never know when those self rescue skills will be needed.
I have countless stories of my students parents sitting with their child watching them slip and immediately rotate to a float. Thankfully the kids were skilled and the parents were watching, but always good to see those skills are there if needed!

It's time to rethink how we view and introduce our children to the water. Teaching our children that water is safe and fun when not skilled, is not only unfair to them it can be dangerous. The number one cause of accidental death in children 4 and under is drowning. Yes, the water can be fun, but it should also be respected. By getting your children skilled, they can learn how to safely navigate the water. Reach out to [email protected] to get your kiddos skilled and ready for the water by summer.
