Matthew 5:14–16
“You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
When you think of someone who is a light in your life, who comes to mind?
Maybe it’s someone who encourages you, checks on you, makes you laugh, listens when you're struggling, or simply makes you feel like you matter.
I think sometimes we make being a light seem like we have to do something huge for God. We think we need to have the perfect words, lead a Bible study, go on a mission trip, or somehow change hundreds of lives. But Jesus tells us simply to let our light shine.
Being a light isn't always about doing something big. Sometimes it's about being faithful with the small opportunities God puts right in front of us.
Matthew 5:14
“You are the light of the world.”
Notice Jesus doesn't say:
”You might become a light.”
”You should try to be a light.”
”Only pastors are the light.”
”Only people who know the Bible really well are the light.”
He says:
“You are the light.”
Because when we have Christ in us, we carry His light into the places we go. You may be the only glimpse of Jesus someone encounters today.
That might happen:
In your classroom
At work
At practice
At the grocery store
In your family
In a race
You don't always know what someone is carrying.
Your smallest act of kindness could be a huge reminder to someone that God sees them.
You don't need light when everything is already bright. A flashlight doesn't seem very impressive outside at noon. But take that same flashlight into a completely dark room and suddenly it makes a difference.Sometimes God puts us in dark places not because He has forgotten us, but because He wants His light to shine through us.
There may be people around you who are lonely, confused, or struggling with their faith.
And God may have placed you in their life for a reason. You don't have to fix them. You don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes being a light simply means saying to them.
“I'm here.”
“I'm praying for you.”
“You matter.”
What are some things that cause us to hide our light?
Fear of what people think
Wanting to fit in
Fear of being judged
Being afraid to talk about our faith
You don't have to be perfect to shine.
Your testimony doesn't have to be perfect. Your faith doesn't have to be perfect. You can still be growing and be a light. Sometimes people don't need to see someone who has everything figured out. They need to see someone who can say:
“I'm still figuring it out too, but I know God is faithful.”
Where can I shine in this race and in my personal life?
You don't have to change the whole world today or this week. Just be faithful with the little corner of the world God has placed you in.
A light doesn't make a lot of noise. It simply shines.
You don't have to force people to see Jesus. You don't have to have the perfect words. Just keep showing up. Keep encouraging. Keep loving people. Keep choosing kindness. Keep pointing people toward Jesus.
And let God do the rest.
