🏹 Road to the Rendezvous – Week 5: Why We Shoot Paper to Get Better at 3D

One question I get asked quite often is:

“Why do target archers spend so much time shooting paper faces when the goal is to shoot animals?”

The answer is simple: paper exposes every mistake.

A 3D target can be forgiving. You can hit an 8, 10, or even a 12 while getting away with small ex*****on errors. On paper, there is nowhere to hide. Every shot is measured. Every mistake is visible.

Shooting paper scoring targets teaches:

✅ Precise aiming
✅ Shot ex*****on under pressure
✅ Holding steadier in the wind
✅ Consistent shot timing
✅ Confidence when every arrow counts

When you spend time trying to put every arrow into the middle of a Vegas X, a 5-ring, or a field target center, you learn exactly what a good shot feels like. Then when you step onto a 3D range and have to judge a lane, deal with uneven footing, or fight the wind, your focus shifts from simply hitting the target to executing the shot.

The best 3D shooters I know aren’t just great at shooting animals. They’re great at shooting spots.

Whether it’s league night, a Vegas face, a field target, or a blank bale, every arrow is an opportunity to refine the process.

Because when the pressure is on and the difference between winning and losing is one arrow, you’re not relying on luck.

You’re relying on thousands of shots that taught you what perfect ex*****on feels like.

🔥 BOWS & BURGERS 🍔🏹

We had the opportunity to attend the first annual Bows & Burgers this weekend and had an absolute blast. Great people, good shooting, plenty of laughs, and of course an awesome meal to top it all off.

One of the highlights of the day was watching Brian step up with his Genesis and send arrows at 70 meters. Once he figured out his holdover, he started stacking them in there surprisingly consistently — proof that archery is supposed to be fun no matter what you’re shooting.

Events like this are what make the archery community special. Friends, family, competition, learning, and a bunch of people enjoying the sport together.

Huge thank you for the invite. We truly appreciate it and are already looking forward to doing it again next year. 💥🏹
