Horse Hill preserve is Marin County Open Space, approx 55 acres of public pasture and trails with 14 privately owned horses cared for cooperatively by Alto Bowl Horse Owners Association.

Is Ripp deceased, or just getting his beauty rest? Horses need sleep, just as we humans do. Being polyphasic sleepers, horses nap standing throughout the day, dozing with eyes at half-mast while their legs’ specialized stay apparatus keeps them upright with no muscle effort. Lateral recumbency (lying flat on one side or other) provides REM sleep which is essential for horses’ neurological and psychological health. Horses need a total of 2 - 4 hours of periodic sleep in various configurations (standing, sternal, lateral) every 24 hours. A horse deep in REM sleep depends on its standing herd mates to provide watchfulness against predators.

Occasionally, Hill visitors will call with concern about a “dead” horse. We always respond to check out every report, even as we are confident it’s just equine nap time. We locate, count and fully inspect the whole herd 1-2 times every day.

Someone recently decided to throw pumpkins into the pasture. While we understand that this may seem like a kind gesture, **please do not feed the horses**.

Feeding horses can create serious health and safety risks. They may fight over food, have allergies or dietary restrictions, or even choke on certain foods.

For the safety and well-being of all the horses, please do not leave or throw **carrots, apples, pumpkins, hay, straw, or any other food** into the pasture.

We truly appreciate your kindness and understanding. Thank you for helping us keep the horses safe and healthy!
