Horses need dental care because their teeth continuously erupt and wear down unevenly, which creates sharp points that cause painful mouth ulcers, difficulty chewing, and dangerous digestive issues.
Adult Horses should have their teeth examined by a vet or equine dentist at least once a year, though the exact frequency depends heavily on their age and individual dental health.
Continuous growth: A horse's cheek teeth (molars) keep erupting out of the jaw over their lifetime as they get worn down by grinding fibrous plants.
Sharp points: Because a horse's upper jaw is wider than the lower jaw, their teeth do not wear down completely evenly. This leaves sharp enamel points on the outside of the upper teeth and inside of the lower teeth.
Soft tissue damage: These sharp edges scrape and cut into the horse's tongue and cheeks, creating painful sores and ulcers.
Proper chewing: Horses must grind their food in a circular motion. Dental pain stops them from chewing correctly.
Quidding: Horses with bad teeth may drop partially chewed clumps of hay or grass from their mouths, a sign known as quidding.
Colic and weight loss: Poorly chewed food cannot digest well, which can lead to serious and fatal conditions like weight loss, choke, and colic.
Infections: Sharp hooks, steps, or cracked teeth can invite severe periodontal disease and tooth root abscesses.

Another example of Tarweed. Makes them a little sticky. Once we wash it off, it's right back the next day. This happens in the late summer on the dry pasture. It's visible on their faces, legs and tail
