From the minds at Beyond
Inspired by the story of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.
Aalto is Finland’s most influential modernist architect and designer. Unlike many modernists who favored rigid geometric forms, Aalto embraced organic curves, natural materials, and nature inspired architecture. His work emphasized flow instead of symmetry. In 1939 Aalto designed the Villa Mairea, a private residence that featured one of the very first documented free form swimming pools. Years later American landscape architect Thomas Church, inspired by Aalto’s designs, started incorporating similar flowing pools into California residential architecture. The number of these pools throughout California combined with the droughts of the 70’s then lead to the evolution of pool riding and in turn modern transition skateboarding.
The BEYOND DUNK celebrates the intersection of design, architecture and skateboarding.
