Supreme Court Rules 6–3 for Religious Parents in School Curriculum Case

On June 27, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6–3 in Mahmoud v. Taylor, granting a victory to religious parents who sought to opt their children out of public school lessons featuring LGBTQ+-themed storybooks.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion, stating that a Maryland school board’s refusal to provide an opt-out policy placed an “unconstitutional burden” on parents’ free exercise of religion. The case began in Montgomery County Public Schools after the district stopped allowing elementary students to be pulled from English lessons that included LGBTQ+ characters.

The three liberal justices dissented, with Justice Sotomayor warning the ruling could create administrative “chaos” for public schools. The decision requires districts to accommodate notice and opt-out requests for content that conflicts with sincerely held religious beliefs.
