Every leader I coach is navigating some kind of change right now. Some of it you choose. Some of it gets decided for you, including at the ballot box.

Before you vote this year, ask yourself two questions:

1️⃣ What rules, costs, or regulations are in my way right now and slowing my growth?

2️⃣ What's on the horizon that could help my business grow, or hold it back?

Then look at who and what is on your ballot. Taxes, health care costs, hiring rules, trade, and local permits are all shaped by the people we elect, from city hall to Congress.

You don't have to agree with anyone else. You do have to show up.

💡Early voting is already open in many states. Find your dates at vote.gov and make your voice heard before Election Day, Tuesday, November 3.

The hardest part of leading a team through change often happens before you say a word to them.

In my latest article, I share the story of an executive facing a major restructuring. Teams were being combined, responsibilities reorganized, and one team was moving under another leader.

He didn't start by planning the announcement. He started by working through what the change meant for him, through coaching, conversations with other leaders, and talks at home with his wife. Once he'd done that work, he could fully commit and help his people see the bigger picture.

💡As I wrote in the article, "The ability to guide others through a difficult transition depends in part on the work leaders are willing to do within themselves."

Thinking about taking on a business partner? The first question isn't "Who should I partner with?" It's "Do I actually need a partner?"

Before you commit, get clear on what's missing.
→ Is it capital?
→ Leadership?
→ Operational expertise?
→ Sales or marketing?
→ A complementary skill set?

A partner may be the right answer.

But a partnership shouldn't be used to solve a problem that could be addressed another way. Hiring or contracting with the right people may meet the need.

You are leading in very challenging and often polarizing times. How do you role model positive behavior and expectations, showing respect for individual differences or choices?

Polarizing is taking opposite points of view.
Being reactive.
Going apart.
Disagreeing.

💡 The task of leadership is to guide others to find where they come together, within their uniqueness or differences. Whether you like the task or not, you are growing people. Set your own vision for growing healthy, open people. This requires setting expectations, appropriate boundaries, and clarifying the intention to work for connection rather than disruption.

→ Hopefully, you've already laid the foundation for respectful communication, no matter the topic.
→ Setting an expectation that people listen and learn more than they react is a powerful example.
→ Creating a "safe space," when led by someone skilled, can contain necessary conversation.

If you are questioning how or what to do without raising parties or differences, the most obvious answer would be to simply encourage your employees, your work team, your family, and your friends.

💬 "Make a plan to vote. And, if you can, take someone to the polls who may not be able to go on their own."

You might provide them with information on where to vote by mail or give them a few hours off on November 3rd, Election Day.

"Being nice" to one person can become unfair to everyone else.

When a leader avoids a needed conversation, the person may read silence as approval — and the rest of the team notices. A small issue addressed early may take a five-minute conversation. Ignored for six months, it becomes a very different conversation.

Is there a conversation you've been putting off?

Three years ago, Carmen and Inez combined their work friendship and capabilities to leave a company whose values were counter to their own. They started their own business offering the exact same services as their previous company but more aligned with their personal values.

Family, friends, and professional colleagues beat a path to their door to work for this woman-owned, minority-owned new venture, and the work poured in. Their coffers were filled.

Why?

They made a cultural “promise,” based on their authentic values, to interact with employees and customers alike from a place of collaboration, mutual communication, and responsiveness—totally the opposite of their previous toxic environment.

And... they delivered.

When they approached DJHPartners, Inc. for Dr. Jan's coaching and consulting help, they wanted to take their fast-growing company to the next level--but they had run into snags that needed sorting, improvements that needed to be made--to grow successfully.

Maybe you've navigated through the Start-Up Phase of your company. Your objective is next-level growth. Everyone’s vision and capabilities are fully focused on the business's needs.

💡Opening yourself as CEO—as Business Partners, Owners, Founders, Top Executives, and Leaders—to professional growth through Executive Coaching with a Business Development Focus will hone your decision-making. A re-evaluation pause at this stage will ignite growth so you go further, faster.

Carrying these values throughout your company generates loyalty and creativity among all your employees. Others will want to work with you!

We expect a personal trainer to tell us when our form is wrong. So why do so many leaders hesitate to tell their people what needs to change?

Some time ago at the gym, I watched two men trade straight-talk observations between rounds of martial arts practice. No drama, no defensiveness — just a shared goal: get better.

Business should be no different. Here's how to give guidance that's clear, respectful, and useful — without being harsh.

After more than 40 years working with business owners and partners, I've seen the same pattern again and again.

The partners who come to me early — before the frustration settles in, before the issues get personal — have so much more room to work things through.

Usually, it starts with something specific. They're disagreeing about roles. Responsibilities have shifted. Or they've simply realized that the way they've worked together for years may not be enough for where the business is headed.

Here's what I want partners to hear: the most productive conversations often happen before a partnership is in trouble.

The business has changed. The partnership often hasn't changed with it. That's where the work begins.

I wrote about what it takes for partners to keep working well together through growth — trust, accountability, clarity about roles and decisions — and why waiting until there's a problem costs you options.
