If you haven’t been to Boom Island yet to see Saype’s Beyond Walls, we did the hard work for you last Sunday at Coffee (Outside). You can already see how much it has faded. There’s still something to see (even after the rain yesterday). If it’s on your list, make it happen. It won’t last much longer.

Thanks for the drone shots, Brad!

Coffee (Outside) this week is going back to Boom Island. I didn’t plan this well (or at all), but this is an opportunity we can’t miss. So…

Boom Island is hosting Beyond Walls (until it fades away), an absolutely ginormous land-mural/fresco from and a small team of globe travelers.

Join us for Coffee (Outside) Sunday at 10am to see what we can see (honestly, it’s not much). But it is a happening. And it is an important project that we are more than happy to promote. With the planet as a canvas, Saype is creating a metaphorical chain of clasped hands across the entire world. Minneapolis is only the 21st destination for one of these ephemeral frescoes (created with eco-friendly materials) and the first North American site.

PHOTO 1: Saype’s piece stretches across the grass behind Patrick and his Nishiki Modulus. But what you’re really looking at is a Dura-Ace track hub, a component Patrick has been riding for 3 decades. This bike, and several others over the years, has been built around the hub. All of Patrick’s bikes are quirky (to match their rider), and this is no exception.

Patrick has the longest commute of anyone at the shop and today he chose to ride in on a two-speed, one of the more rare builds in the world because a two-speed tends to have all of the derailleurs but very little of the functionality. But the Dura-Ace hub makes it worth it.

Patrick has more mechanic experience than most bike shops and has been in shops all over town. He’s built more of this year’s bike fleet than anyone else. We’re lucky to have him and grateful that he has chosen to settle at Recovery Bike Shop.

As always, everyone is welcome at Coffee (Outside).

Free community yoga at the bike shop at 9am with .

And our weekly ride to put a presence out on the streets of Northeast starts after Coffee (Outside) around 11am.

“This is what community looks like!”

Group ride leaves Sociable Cider, explores the city for about an hour, and returns for free cider. It’s lovely. 😁

Probably you’ve already enjoyed the new Plymouth Bridge bike/ped tunnel. We’ve been using it since last fall. But now it’s officially open!

The new tunnel helps keep riders and runners from crossing paths with cars coming off of the Plymouth bridge, which can really be moving. The tunnel also provides a more direct route through Boom Island for commuters along the river. This will make an even bigger difference after the Marshall St reconstruction in a few years.

Join us for Coffee (Outside) on Sunday at 10:00am. We’ve had so many new people lately that I’m starting to feel obligated to mention that we don’t have coffee. We do bring treats to share, but I personally have never been a coffee drinker, so…yeah. But do feel free to bring your own. Lots of people do.

Everyone is welcome at 9am yoga at the bike shop. It’s free. And we’ll go for a community ride after Coffee (Outside) at 11ish. See you tomorrow!

To paraphrase his daughter, Marko Fields packed a single life with an encyclopedic volume of stories and lived experience. But nothing he did has had more of an impact on me than Mojo Coffee Gallery, where he brought his passions (music, pottery, and most of all people) and put them on display for all to see.

Of course you could purchase many of Marko’s pieces, but Mojo has that lived-in feel of a working studio where a person has shaped and been shaped by an entire career. Mojo is part retail art gallery, part workshop and rehearsal space, and entirely Marko’s playground.

The people that inhabit Mojo on a regular basis meld perfectly with the collection of mismatched dining room and office chairs, each person adding to the decor. But every time I encountered Marko here, he stood out, not like a sore thumb, but like a king, presiding (benevolently) over his own court.

Mojo is one of the looms upon which the fabric of community is woven. Each of us regulars, a thread in that fabric. But Marko, in that space, appeared to be the wearer of whatever cape was being woven. Even as Mojo feels like ours, it was unmistakably Marko’s.

To me, Mojo is a rare perfect third space. For Marko, Mojo may have been first, second, and third space: home, work, and community gathering.

On this Memorial Day weekend we’ll do Coffee Outside of Mojo (Sunday 10am). But I encourage everyone to enjoy the inside of Marko’s coffee gallery too. It was his project and his contribution. Even in his absence Mojo remains Marko’s. But Marko succeeded in also making it ours.

As usual…
