At the Heart

Episode 1: Reading is a Skill It is never too late to be a great reader.

Don't let the sun set on this great deal! The summer is over yet! You could get so much done. The days are getting shorter...don't write in the dark.

I’m often asked, how is it going—the THING you are doing? After teaching for 21 years, life is very different. I thought I’d give a few highlights.

1. Tutoring high school students in writing and grammar. I typically help with specific essays assigned. I helped one 9th grade honors student move from consistent C’s for on-demand essays to A- in about 3 hours of tutoring. (I also do ACT prep and college admissions/scholarship essay coaching.)

2. I’ve done copywriting/copyediting for companies to tighten communication and make it more engaging. It’s especially fun to learn about new topics like telemetry!

3. Training teachers in large general sessions and small sessions on literacy and instruction. I am continually amazed by the phenomenal people working tirelessly for our kids. They deserve so much respect!

4. Editing manuscripts. One particularly fun and challenging one was a rhyming picturebook manuscript. I also just hit “send” on an email for a middle grade manuscript (with a touch of magic) I think publishers will be fighting over this one!!

5. I am teaching a college course—during the day—in person! (I’ve had to only teach college adjunct online.) It’s a joy to prepare all teachers to have literacy rich experiences in their classes.

6. I have time to be an elementary volunteer helping readers with their literacy at this age is so rewarding. Plus—the teacher I support was my student years ago!!

7. Writing conference presenter. It was fun to share my passion while engaging with other creative writers.

8. And more!!

Personally, I’ve had more time to enjoy my family, cook “real food” as my kids say, and take care of my health and wellness.
