Minocqua Area Fishing Report

Moving into mid-September and surface temps finally breaking below 70° and some color coming up to the trees! Monday morning (9/14), temps in the 30’s helped a bunch! Forecast of lows in the 50’s the highs in the upper 60’s bodes well for a smooth transition. Should make for an easier to pattern remainder to September.

Largemouth Bass: Good–Very good - Working heavy w**d growth, drop shotting, Texas rigging, jig and creatures to get down into the thick stuff. Wind wasn’t doing any favors, so slow and heavy did the trick!

Walleye: Good – So far, (with a few exceptions of bites that were normally there at this calendar date but aren’t) Walleye action has been good. It’s the where that has the question marks, find them and they’ve been biting. Three days, three different types of lakes, three different types of terrain, wind made setting up tough, but Walleyes were found in 22-24’ depths holding over sand on one lake, 12-14’ w**d edges on the next day on a different lake and 14-16’ rock bar tops the third day, third lake. Redtails on 3/16 and 1/4 oz jigs if possible (heavier with wind) to 1/8 oz w**dless in the 12-14’ w**d depths. Crawlers actually worked best on the rock bars.

Smallmouth Bass: Good – Out on rock/gravel bars made for tough fishing on mid-lake locations due to wind. Heavy drop shotting rigs or football jigs to keep in contact with bottom was the key. Some nice Smallies still cruising the 14-16‘ w**d edges taking Kietech swim baits on 1/4-3/8 oz jigs!

Musky: Good – Bucktails up over shallow w**ds. Top-water baits when possible with wind. Fish cruising shallows of 4-8’ of water. High riding swim baits also scoring.

Northern Pike: Good – Most caught targeting Walleyes (jig/chub combos) or Musky (bucktails, twitch baits). Work any green w**ds.

Bluegill: Good – Best Gills over wood in 8-14‘ of water. W**ds seem to be holding smaller fish. Slip bobbers and pieces of crawler. Jigging has been tough due to the wind.

Crappie: Fair – Not as many reports this week due to windy conditions. This has hampered holding and fishing. Live bait over plastics in these conditions.

Yellow Perch: Fair – Mostly due to weather. Best over wood with a medium fathead or ½ nightcrawler on a jig or under a slip float if possible.

With temp slowly coming down (readings of 67 to 68° on most lakes), fishing should remain good. Signs of w**d die off on certain types of w**ds, avoid these areas. Walleyes are transitioning to soft bottoms on some lakes based on signs of feeding on Mayfly larva, shows mud use. Yet still some w**d bites available. Musky should remain strong on top-water and bucktails for a while. Weather had a lot to do with it, but fishing pressure light this past weekend.

Lakes still very low, use caution, especially on Flowages and chains where channels leading from one lake to another are impassable due to low water.

Minocqua Area Fishing Report

An incredible Labor Day weekend of weather, us anglers call Chamber of Commerce days. Beautiful, warm, calm-not great for us anglers, but the boaters, skiers and wake boarders sure loved it. The larger lakes and chains were full of boaters, so the smaller lakes (some) Flowages and rivers were best for anglers.

Bluegill: Very Good-Good – Another flying ant hatch was spotted last week, a week from the last. That gets the Gills up and moving in the water column as the ants fall to the lake surface to become easy “slurpies”! W**d edges and drowned wood holding most of the better hand sized Gills being caught.

Largemouth Bass: Good – Bite hasn’t changed. Still good top-water action on loud tail baits (Whopper-Plopper style), Jitterbugs, plastic frogs and mice. Buzz baits, spinnerbaits, and tickling w**d tops with shallow crank baits. Fishing Wacky Worms and urchin style baits as well as Carolina rigging 7” worms in and along cabbage flats also effective.

Yellow Perch: Good – W**d pockets in 8-12’ and around drowned wood or cribs at similar depths. ½ crawlers, medium fats on jigs or below slip-floats best.

Smallmouth Bass: Good – Numbers over and along off-shore rock/gravel bars of 18-27’. Drop-shotting minnow, craw and urchins. Tube jigs of ¼ oz and football/creature combos also effective. Some larger Smallies being caught shallow on surface lures and smaller bucktails meant for Musky.

Crappie: Good-Fair – Relating to deeper w**d of 10-14’. Taking small minnows under floats. Any drowned wood, trees or cribs in similar depths should be worked.

Musky: Good-Fair – Not hearing as much for size as for action. Mostly shallow using bucktails, 6-7” swimbaits and top-water. A couple reports on suckers, but overall best on moving lures.

Northern Pike: Fair – Few reports. Some typical action waters did not produce. When things slow – possibly due to boat traffic, east wind or too “NICE”, jig live bait down in w**ds to entice bites.

Walleye: Fair – As with Pike, weather not in anglers’ favor. Evenings best using redtails over gravel bars in 20-24’ on ¼ oz jigs. Night anglers using chubs under lighted slip-floats providing reports of decent bite between 8-10 PM.

Water surface temps remained in low 70’s this weekend due to warm temps. A drop in average temps this week with lows in upper 40’s to low 50’s should start a nice gradual cool off, getting lake temps into the 60’s. Much needed rain (9/8) won’t be enough to help low water levels, but will speed up the cooling off.

Low water continues to be a problem for launching and access on chains. Be careful at launches, survey water before backing in, especially on Flowages where sharp drop-offs into river channels can be dangerous on trailers.

Minocqua Area Fishing Report

Summer isn’t done with us yet according to the forecast. Highs in the mid to upper-80’s (8/31-9/1), following with upper-70’s. So not expected to see surface temps, which dipped into the upper-60’s, drop any further. Actually, may rise a little again. Due to the heat, as usual for this time of year, algae blooms have occurred. Big and Little Arbor Lakes, Big St. Germaine and Bearskin are a few of the recently visited and reported “green” lakes. Fish are being caught, but not an encouraging sight.

Bluegill: Very Good-Good – Strong reports of catches along w**d edges and over cribs and drowned wood. Beaver tails, small leeches, even small crappie minnows below slip floats. Working tiny plastics, such as Mini Mites and 1” tubes are a less messy alternative.

Crappie: Good-Very Good – Look for suspended schools outside w**d lines in 14-20” of water. Hang minnows at depths to entice bites. Vertical jigging, small ultra-light Rip ‘n Raps and #2 jigging Raps scoring on these suspended Crappies. Small bladed under spins. Beetle spins or #1 Mepps spinners also working.

Largemouth Bass: Good-Very Good – Still taking the high road (top-water). Whopper Ploppers, Jitterbugs, Hula Poppers and buzz baits early, and especially late, in the day. Heavy w**d, flat action has slowed, but still out there. Wacky Worms and dropping urchin baits working here.

Smallmouth Bass: Good-Very Good – Gravel/rock bars topping out at 12’, but most deeper, are producing for anglers. Ned rigging or drop-shotting minnow or craw imitations along with urchin baits. A few larger specimens reported by Musky anglers, casting bucktails in shallows. Typical of Smallies…No Fear!

Walleye: Good – Work away from w**d edges out along mud bottoms of 22-25’ using redtails or full crawlers. Always check rock bars as it seems fish on top are ready to eat. Vertical jigging with Raps and Shiver minnows good way to pick up active biters over the mud.

Northern Pike: Good – Spinners, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits – work cabbage flats in 6-12’ of water. Go with jigging chubs or suckers for a slower pace on bright days with little cloud cover and little wind.

Musky: Good - Bucktails over cabbage flats, Wizards and Hunsey’s producing. Top-water will remain a good choice throughout September. With water temperatures remaining high, keep speed up, even when working wood or plastic baits such as gliders and jerks.

Yellow Perch: Good – Better size Perch found outside w**d edges, over mud, taking ½ crawlers, Beaver tails, medium fatheads. Drifting sandgrass flats of 14-18’ with pencil style weights and floating jig heads to keep the bait 1 to 1 ½’ off the bottom effective. Drop-shotting live bait here also producing.

Didn’t see annual flying ant hatch until after last report for you Bluegill anglers asking. Starting to see a little bit of color from a very few Sugar Maples, but will probably stop with warm weather this week. Consistent, yet a little warm, weather should help patterns persist. Forecast for chance of rain on September 4th, but overall, good weather to start the first week of September. Don’t see any real changes until late during the second week of the month.

Minocqua Area Fishing Report 8/25
A slow roll into the fall season as of August 24th! Mild highs in the mid 70s followed by nights in the 50s. Water temps are slowly dropping, with most lakes in the 71-72o range and a few early morning surface temps at 69o. Have not seen much for sugar maples turning, though a few poplar trees are.

Largemouth Bass: Good – Action falling off a little. Still good for evening top-water and midday working w**d tops with 3 ½” swimbaits or pre-rigged plastic worms. Sunny days around boat houses with wacky worms and urchins pitched up in the shade.

Bluegill: Good-Very Good – Gills seem to be everywhere! While fishing deep w**d edges using crawlers or leeches for walleyes in 20-24’ of water- you’ll find gills! Up in 7-12’ cabbage, gills are taking small plastics and under spins (Charlie Bees) meant for crappies. Good catches of nice “eaters” 7 ½” plus!

Smallmouth Bass: Good – Key on rock bars in 18-28’ using drop-shot rigs or football jigs dressed with creature plastics. Also along coontail edges of 14-18’ using Ned rigs or more drop-shots with 3” minnow or craw imitations and urchins.

Northern Pike: Good – Bladed spinners and chatter baits as well as 4” swimbaits worked just at w**d top level to a foot or two below. High-pressure days, go with a w**dless jig and a lively black chub of 4-5” to entice strikes.

Yellow Perch: Good-Fair – Still finding some nice perch in 8’ cabbage. Mud flats outside w**d edges in 12-16’ as well as amongst drowned wood. Beavertails, ½ crawlers, or medium leeches and fatheads.

Musky: Good-Fair – Reports improving as more anglers are heading out with waters cooling- Bucktails by far have been the best over and along w**d beds. Rubber for the offshore anglers and a decent topwater bite for the evening thrill seekers!

Walleye: Good-Fair – Had some ups and downs, but the ups were very good working full crawlers or medium redtails outside coontail edges in 20-24’ over mud. Also picking up nice walleyes at same depths over rocks. Bright days and east winds slowed action to just smaller fish. You could mark ‘em, but just couldn’t get ‘em to bite.

Crappie: Good-Fair – Fewer reports with some anglers finding crappies moving out of w**ds and suspending at times along coontail edges of 14-18’. Small plastics (Kalin crappie scrubs, B. Garland Itty Bit, Slab Hunters, and 1 ½” Power Bait tubes) as well as slip floats with small to medium fatheads.

Daily weather seems to have had the most effect on bites. Some days have been way better than others. As water slowly cools, we should see some set-up for better flowage bites. While turn-over is a long way off, change in the amount of light will push some w**ds to start showing signs of dying back. Water levels are low on lakes as well as flowages, so check before launching as some accesses are becoming a bit difficult!

Minocqua Area Fishing Report

A fairly steady week of weather again made for some similar fishing as the week prior. A few bumps here and there, but overall, cool mornings (mid-40’s – mid-50’s) followed by high in mid-upper 70’s for the most part. Lake surface temps are averaging in the 72-73° marks in the AM but still rising to the 77° mark.

Largemouth Bass: Very Good – Continues to keep the rods bending. Top-water action, especially in late afternoon/evenings when water is warmest has continued to be HOT!!! Zara Spooks, Whopper Ploppers, Jitterbugs, and buzzbaits. Frogs, mice and spiders also pulling big Bass out of lily pads and slop. Subtle plastics such as Urchins, Wacky Worms or 7” Power Worms rigged Carolina for daytime action. Along with spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and 4” swimbaits on bladed jig heads. Check out the photo of 11 yr old, local Bass nut Jordan with his 7 # behemoth from this past weekend.

Bluegill: Very Good – They seem to be everywhere! W**ds of 8-12’, coontail edges of 14-18’ – suspended 4-6’ off bottom, even on rock humps. If you don’t want to catch Bluegills – don’t use worms! Small plastics such as Mini Mites, 1” tubes and 1 ½” Ned worms effective.

Smallmouth Bass: Very Good-Good – Gravel/rock bars and humps holding good #’s. Drop-shotting 2 ½ - 3” plastic craws, Gulp-alive Minnows, 3” Wacky Worms. Football jig and creature combos also working. Some reports from top-water angler catching big Smallies in shallows on Whopper Ploppers. Ned rigs and Urchin rigs also producing.

Northern Pike: Good – Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and square billed cranks (but not without a wire leader) worked over cabbage flats of 5-10’. Live baiting a 4-6” chub or sucker also producing some nice Pike.

Yellow Perch: Good – Mud flats on dark water Flowages in 12-14’ on ½ crawlers. On lakes use a medium fathead or medium leech to get down in cabbage flats. Go slightly heavy (1/8 oz jig) and don’t use crawlers here a small Gills will tear them apart.

Musky: Good-Fair Bucktails over w**d flats and edges during day. Top-water action at dusk.

Walleye: Good-Fair – Action on some lakes slowed, could have bee the east by southeast wind on Saturday (never good), or just poor lake choice. Some reports from several guides experiencing same thing. Could see them on locators, couldn’t get to bite. Overall, not bad. W**d bite backing off on some lakes, picking up on others. Redtails, large leeches and crawlers all good – use first two around w**ds, save crawlers for grave/rocks of 18-28’.

Crappie: Good-Fair - Dropped because of my own personal experiences. My “hot spots” cooled off. Others finding good action along coontail edges or around drowned trees.

Rest of the week looks fairly stable (until Friday). Lows in low 50’s, daytime high in mid-70’s. Lake traffic lighter as kids in many states heading back to school. Nice time to be on the water.

Minocqua Area Fishing Report

Nice, stable summer weather. A little cool in the AM, but warm enough in the afternoons. Surface temps hovering around 73° on average. That, and the moon period coming in and should be a good week.

Largemouth Bass: Very Good-Good – Continuing to top the charts as the “green goblins” keep action up for all types of bassin’ tactics. Top-water, buzz, spinnerbaits and chatters for the restless. Wacky, Neds and urchin style baits for the patient. Time of day? Topside dawn and dusk. W**d tops mid-morning and late afternoons. Midday – plunge the w**ds with the soft stuff.

Crappie: Very Good-Good – Lots of great reports from anglers working deep w**d tops of 8-12’ using small plastic minnow imitations by Keitech, Berkley, and twister tails.

Smallmouth Bass: Very Good-Good – Deep w**d edges and gravel/rock bars using drop-shot rigs to present urchins, craw imitations and 3” gulp minnows in 18-28’.

Bluegill: Good-Very Good – Roaming w**d tops, taking small tubes and grubs as well as leafworms and small leeches (their back!)

Northern Pike: Good – Best over heavy cabbage flats casting Boonie Baits, chatterbaits or swimming 4” swimbaits. Spinners, twitchbaits and shallow cranks also working.

Yellow Perch: Good – Heavy cabbage holding some nice Perch. Use medium fatheads to keep smaller Gills away.

Musky: Good-Fair – Improving as anglers getting out and targeting with water temps in low 70’s. Top-water and Bucktails (Hunsey’s, Wizards) as well as fast moving twitch and swimbaits outside and into heavy cabbage.

Walleye: Fair-Good – Strollers reporting good action on cranks over 22-40' of water, fishing 6-20' down. Jig and bait (crawlers, redtails, some leeches) along outside w**d edges in 12-15'. Slip bobbers also effective.

As said earlier, should be a good week with favorable and fairly stable weather.

Minocqua Area Fishing Report

Here we are in August, feels like it…warm & sticky! Fish don’t seem to mind as much as some of us do. Overall, good reports. The Bass, Gill and Crappie bites have remained strong. Walleye and Pike okay, but still good enough to pay some time on. Water temps from earlier last week that fell into the low-70’s are back in the upper-70’s, making most Musky anglers back off once again.

Largemouth Bass: Very Good – The boys (and girls) of summer! Pick your poison chasing Bass up top with frogs, buzzbaits and hard baits such as Whopper Ploppers and jitterbugs. Spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, as well as pre-rigged worms for staying out of the w**ds. Otherwise, plunge into cabbage pockets with anything “Fuzzy” such as Senkos, Neds, Nuts and Silencers. Lots of choices and lots of action.

Smallmouth Bass: Very Good-Good – Deep w**d edges of 14-18’ and gravel/rock humps of 18-28’. Ned rigs and drop-shots. 3” worm or minnow imitations and the hot new “dice” or Fuzzy “things”!

Bluegill: Very Good-Good – Work w**d tops of cabbage flats, but also finding suspended Gills outside coontail edges of 14-18’. If it fits in their mouth (worms, minnows, small plastics) they will try to eat it. Lots of good sized “eaters” in the 7 ½-8 ½” range.

Crappie: Good-Very Good – Nice Crappies cruising the taller w**ds of 9-14’. Jigs of 1/16-1/8 oz tipped with medium fatheads, Keitech worms (2 ½-3”), 2” twister tails or 1/8 oz Beetle spins and the like. Nice “eaters” of 10-12”+ with a few “slabs” of 13-14” thrown in for good “measure”!

Yellow Perch: Good – Liking the heat! Finding nice, but scattered, in 8-12’ along edges of cabbage with mud flats nearby. Feeding on small crayfish and dragon fly larvae. Medium fatheads and ½ crawlers on 1/32-1/16 oz jigs or under slip-floats.

Walleye: Fair-Good – Most reports from anglers either working deeper gravel-rock humps of 20-30’ using crawlers on jigs or Lindy Rigs. Casting searchbaits or Shiver Spoons dressed with a whole or ½ crawler for suspended fish. Some reports of Walleyes being caught along outside w**d edges of 9-14’. These fish showing soft shells in their bellies, so they must be working up into the w**ds. Crawlers, redtails or whatever seems to come out in the Walleye mix, all seem to be working!

Northern Pike: Fair-Good – Some nice fish hitting spinnerbaits (Boonie Baits), chatterbaits and 4” swimbaits. Best in w**d cover of 7-12’.

Musky: ?? – When temps on lakes dropped to 72° early last week, moved some fish on top-water and bucktails. When temps got above 75-76°, they left them alone.

Forecast looks rather stable this coming week with temps of mid-70’s to low-80’s for highs and lows in upper-50’s. Should keep current fish patterns fairly consistent.

Minocqua Fishing Report July 27th, 2026
Weather cool enough to get our local surface temps back down to the 72 to 73° mark last week. Enough for some musky angling. But warm weather has temps back into the 77 to 78° mark as of today. Now a cool down on Friday may ease some of the temps, but forecast has most days back into the mid 80s this week and next.

Largemouth bass; Very good
Scourge of the Northwoods to some anglers, but keeping the rods bending! Top water action still ‘tops’ (see how I did that)? for early morning and late in the day. Pre-rigged plastic worms, wacky worms, amoeba/silencer/ uni thingamabobs still the rage. Spinner baits, chatter baits, square billed cranks, you name it, they want to try to eat it and I get it!

Bluegill; good to very good
Hovering around your favorite cabbage, patch, docks, boathouse, swim rafts, even down along deep Coontail edges. If they can get it in their tiny little mouth, they’ll grab it.

Smallmouth bass; good to very good

Reports of some very nice bass this week in the 17 to 21 1/2 inch range on Ned rigs and drop shot rigs over rocks, sand grass, Flats and cribs of 16 to 28 feet.

Crappie; Good-VeryGood
Anglers casting small bladed grub combos through top 2 feet of tall, narrow leaf cabbage scoring good catches of 10 to 12 inch fish with some slabs of 15 inches this past week. Crappie minnows under small floats won’t be passed up either!

Northern Pike; good
Action picked up with a cooler water. Spinners, chatters, and under spins with plastic swim tails working best.

Yellow perch; good
Found scattered amongst 8 to 12 foot cabbage edges taking half inch crawlers or medium fat heads. One group reporting success on mini 1 1/2”Ned worm rigs.

Walleye ;fair to good
Depending on the source, most bites, tough, but a few anglers picking up suspended fish On crawler harness rigs trolled and (remember one line per person not more than three lines trolled per boat) 20 to 24 feet down over 24 to 32 foot of water

Musky; fair
Not a lot of reports as anglers just starting to target. Buck tails best over w**ds but mostly sub 36 inch fish being caught.
