‘Ash jump’ for Bruce Kramer - This week I randomly met Bruce’s mom and sister waiting in the parking lot of Tombstone. They introduced themselves and explained that Bruce was a BASE jumper and recently passed. He loved Moab and more specifically Tombstone. They were hoping to find a BASE jumper to take Bruce (his ashes) for one last BASE jump from Tombstone. The weather battled us, but eventually we got the perfect weather window to honor BASE 509.
BASE jumpers can apply for a ‘BASE number’ after they jump from all four of the BASE objects that creat the B.A.S.E. acronym; building, antenna, span (think bridge), and earth (cliffs). Bruce was number 509 meaning he was the 509th person to achieve this. I believe the BASE number is currently around 2500.
I did not know Bruce, but I did know some of his friends. He was a generation ahead of me. I’ve always been a sucker for BASE history because I feel like those were the people that paved the way for the activity that would ultimately play a huge part in my life.
Bruce did not die BASE jumping. I don’t say that to paint a picture of BASE that is safe, I just find it important to share a bit of what I know. However, BASE jumpers also assign numbers to individuals that do pass jumping. Maybe I will make a post about that another time.
I took the photo of Katie Hansen Lajeunesse throwing Bruce’s ashes, then his family gave me the picture of Bruce jumping Tombstone. The similarities were striking to me. 3 decades have gone by and the gear has evolved, but the individuals and the landscape are not so different at all.
His family requested that Katie use a classic BASE jumper saying before she makes the jump, “3-2-1, see ya!” The expression has been used for decades and still we say it today.
Bruce, and all of the original gangsters of BASE, thank you. It’s not lost on me how absurd my life is. It’s so odd, but it’s almost entirely luck. If it were not for the generation ahead of me, I have no idea what my life would look like today.
Video to come…
Thank those that went before you, help those that will jump after you.
