Nothing gives me a shopping high quite like finding something I didn’t even know I wanted.

Today, mine are red gingham pants and a slightly grandma crochet knit. Extremely pleased with myself.

I thought a lot more about how I wanted to give birth than how I wanted to mother.

And I definitely didn’t think enough about what becoming parents would ask of us as a couple.

Now, a couple years in, I think so much of motherhood is learning to trust yourself. To take what resonates and leave what doesn’t. To let your child need you without worrying you’re creating some terrible habit. To hold a boundary without turning it into a 45 minute negotiation. To let ordinary life be enough.

I’m still figuring all of this out, obviously. But these are a few things I’d tell a friend before she had a baby — and, maybe more importantly, things I still need to remind myself.
