Questions we get all the time as trail & ultra coaches - more detailed answers 👇

Q: “I’m not elite, can I still have a coach?”
A: Anyone can benefit from a coach. As long as your “why” is strong, you’re excited to jump into the challenge and you collaborate and communicate with your coach, coaching can be a beautiful partnership with abundant reward.

Q: “Whet if I can’t follow my training plan perfectly?”
A: This is NORMAL! Life happens and things may need to get adjusted or altered. This is a huge benefit of a good coaching relationship - someone to help you balance training with life and rearrange as needed.

Q: “I seem to be injury prone. Can I still complete an ultra?”
A: Every situation is different, but largely the answer is yes. This is where careful design to your training block(s) and extra emphasis on injury prevention is critical. A multisport approach to training with inclusion of cross training and strength training can still lead to successful results!

Q: “I’m pretty new to training. Am I bothering you with too many questions?”
A: Absolutely not! Having regular communication is essential to optimizing training and is key to a successful coaching relationship! We value all communication and strongly encourage this part of the coaching process!

Q: “Do you have to run big volume?”
A: We don’t have a “one size fits all” prescription for training. We customize training progression to each individual athlete, which includes training history, capacity/load tolerance, injury history, goals and more. We aren’t against big volume (when it fits), but this isn’t the only key to success either.

Q: “I don’t live in the mountains. Can I still be ready for a more mountainous race?”
A: Absolutely! There are so many effective ways to still train your body (and mind) for the demands of a mountainous race. We lean into strength training, cross training and creative forms of still simulating the demands of the mountains.

You can see some themes ➡️ individualization, context and history, communication and teamwork!!!!

A recent “aha” moment in my own training:

I’ve been focusing more on stacking my ribs and reducing rib flare — essentially finding a better relationship between my rib cage and pelvis, with gentle engagement through my lower core.

But I realized I was missing a really important piece:

Can I maintain that connection once I start adding movement and demands through my upper body?

Because that’s running.

Running isn’t a static position where we simply “hold” our ribs over our pelvis. We’re constantly moving our arms, rotating through the trunk, shifting our weight, and creating force through our legs — all while trying to maintain enough control through our center to keep everything connected.

So rather than simply practicing a stacked position in isolation, we need to challenge our ability to maintain it while we move.

That’s where dynamic drills, upper-body movement, and strength work come in - as demonstrated in this video.

The takeaways:

→ Stacking isn’t about rigidity. We want control without holding tension everywhere.

→ Core engagement is more than “abs on.” It’s about creating enough stability through the trunk while still being able to breathe and move.

→ Position matters most when movement is added. If we can only find the position when standing still, we haven’t really trained it for running.

→ Running-specific strength should challenge connection. Can you maintain your trunk position while your arms and legs create movement and force?

Ultimately, the goal isn’t to run with a perfectly “tucked” pelvis or rigidly held ribs.

It’s to develop the strength, control and awareness to maintain a strong, connected trunk while allowing the rest of your body to move freely.

Give this sequence a try and see how you can carry this tip into your own running mechanics!

Do you have scary goals on the horizon???

➡️ ➡️ You don’t need to know exactly how you’ll reach that big, slightly terrifying goal. You need something that excites you, a willingness to work and a plan that meets you where you are and moves you toward where you want to go.

That means looking at the full picture:

🌟Your experience, strengths & history
🌟Your race’s distance, terrain & elevation
🌟Well-rounded training, strength programming & injury prevention.
🌟Additional considerations such as fueling, gear, etc.
🌟The life that it all fits in with harmony & balance

What always helps calm the nerves is having the right team behind you. Support helps you stay grounded, committed and ready for the challenges ahead—running wild, while being intentional.

If you’re chasing a goal that feels a little scary—in the best way—you’re in the right place.

Follow WildPeak Collective and be a part of our collective—learning, sharing, generating excitement and daring to chase those wildest peaks!

Athlete Shoutout!!! 📣📣📣

A huge congrats to athlete Mac Jackson for his finish at the Wasatch 100 !

Here’s what he had to say -

“On September 11th, I was lucky enough to run the Wasatch Front 100, a race I’ve held in the highest regard since I learned of it. Getting to the start line was a challenge after an ankle injury mid-training block, and coming from Florida, the altitude was always going to be a factor, and I’m deeply grateful that these limitations weren’t overwhelming. By the time I crossed the finish line nearly 35hrs later, I had fallen in love with the race and community, and I now know and believe I can tackle big mountain races. Wasatch also puts a bow on my most successful year as a runner; four races, four different states, four finishes I’m proud of. As always, thank you Coach Manuela Vilaseca for getting me there - your guidance and support is indispensable.”

What an accomplishment, what a season and what a great mindset going into this race! You amaze us and show us the true meaning of determination while being very present in each aspect of the build. We are do grateful for you Mac! CONGRATS!!! 🎉

Our quarterly call was last night! We had great conversation about all things related to injury - assembling your healthcare team, advocacy, dealing with the mental struggles, staying connected with your community and return to run post-injury.

It’s something all of us will likely face throughout our running journeys (obviously let’s do as much as we can to minimize the risk!) but there are ways to manage it and get through the lows with as much grit and grace as possible.

Thank you for the great discussion last night! And even bigger thank you for making our Collective grow to what it is today! This community is the best!!! 🫶

Email went out to the team this morning with the link to watch the recording of the conversation and the Save the Dates for next quarter! 🙌

Training Tip Tuesday 📝 with Coach Brittany Peterson !

How do we get better at uphill running while still making sure we are keeping our easy days easy enough???

We recommend looking at the CUMULATIVE effort of the entire run—not just whether every single moment stays perfectly within your “Recovery RPE.”

Yes, there are times when hiking an uphill is the right choice, especially when running it would make the effort too taxing. But there are also times when working on running the uphills is beneficial, even if that means briefly pushing a little above your usual recovery effort.

The key is what happens after that effort.

If you work on running a section of uphill, give yourself plenty of time to recover afterwards—whether that means hiking, jogging very easily or running on flatter or downhill terrain—before you ask for another harder uphill effort.

The goal isn’t to make an easy run hard.

It’s to practice running uphill while keeping the overall run easy.

That’s an important distinction. ⛰️🏃

Training Tip Tuesday 📝 from Coach 🙏

💡How many times do you skip out on carrying your full pack with all of your needed gear?
💡Have you ever showed up to the start of your race and felt the weight of your pack and wondered if you should have prepared for that more?

Today’s reminder is to train with race-specific gear which also includes the actual quantity of gear required on race day, including full volume of fluids and your actual planned quantity of nutrition products. Many races have a lot of mandatory gear OR it is SAFEST to be out in the mountains with more gear than your typical training run - don’t forget to train for that detail so you show up to the start confident and prepared for the challenge ahead!

Happy Training everyone! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️
