Today, we remember a true titan of the salt.

On this day, the land speed racing and hot rodding communities pause to honor the legendary George Poteet. He was not just a driver; he was the heartbeat of modern land speed racing, a visionary builder, and a true Southern gentleman.

Behind the wheel of the iconic Speed Demon, George redefined what was possible on the Bonneville Salt Flats. He didn't just break the 400-mph barrier—he absolutely dominated it, completing more than 55 passes above 400 mph, a breathtaking feat unmatched by anyone else in history. He pushed the limits of horsepower and physics, securing 13 SCTA records and 6 FIA world records.

Yet, despite all the historic milestones and international acclaim, his humble nature, warm smile, and profound generosity remained his true hallmarks. He fiercely supported the sport, funded track preparations, and always made time to thank the starters, volunteers, and fans who made racing possible.

The salt feels a little quieter and the world a little slower without him, but George's legacy remains etched forever into the timing slips of racing history. Our thoughts and deepest prayers continue to be with the Poteet family, the Speed Demon crew, and the endless list of friends he made along the way.

Godspeed, George. May the salt forever rise to meet you, and may you keep chasing that endless horizon and we’ll meet again in that great white dyno in the sky…
