Hey, history buffs! Join us at Red Beard’s Outfitter as historian and archaeologist Mike Thomin explores the remarkable story of Tristan de Luna’s ill-fated colonization attempt and the archaeological discoveries that are bringing it back to life.
Three ships from Luna’s fleet have been discovered beneath Pensacola Bay, and archaeologists have also identified the settlement site on land. Mike will share what researchers are learning from the shipwrecks, the settlement, and the artifacts connected to one of the earliest European colonization efforts in what is now the United States.
For those interested in the early history of Mobile and the northern Gulf Coast, this story also provides important context for understanding Spanish artifacts found throughout our region, many of which are often assumed to be connected to Hernando de Soto.
Mike Thomin is the Director of Education and Interpretation for the Florida Public Archaeology Network and a Senior Research Associate at the University of West Florida. He has nearly two decades of experience in public archaeology, maritime history, historic preservation, museum education, and heritage interpretation. His work has appeared in academic publications, documentaries, and television programs on the Travel Channel and Discovery Channel.
Come hear the story of a colony destroyed by a hurricane, ships lost beneath the bay, and the ongoing archaeological search for one of the Gulf Coast’s most fascinating early settlements.
