Survive a Plunge Down a Waterfall

Tuna are among the most remarkable swimmers in the ocean, but their extraordinary abilities come with a vital requirement: they must keep moving constantly. Unlike many fish, tuna lack a swim bladder, an organ that helps maintain buoyancy. Instead, they rely on the constant flow of water over their gills to breathe. If a tuna stops swimming, water no longer passes efficiently over its gills, preventing oxygen absorption and leading to suffocation.
This need for perpetual motion has shaped tuna into one of the oceanβs fastest and most efficient predators. Their streamlined bodies, powerful muscles, and crescent-shaped tails allow them to reach speeds up to 75 kilometers per hour. Continuous swimming also aids in thermoregulation; tuna are partially warm-blooded, allowing them to maintain higher body temperatures than surrounding water, which enhances their hunting efficiency.
Because they cannot afford to stop, tuna spend almost their entire lives in motion, covering vast distances across oceans. This relentless activity makes them highly migratory and crucial for marine ecosystems as top predators. Their constant movement, however, also makes them vulnerable to overfishing, as modern fishing methods can easily track and capture them during migration. Tuna are living symbols of endurance, demonstrating how life in the ocean often depends on motion for survival.
