“The Chocolate Shop with a Secret Past”

Lagomarcino’s in Moline is known for its old-school charm, decadent chocolate, and vintage soda fountain…but there’s something else beneath the surface that most visitors never see.

Literally.

Beneath the shop’s basement lies a sealed stairwell, bricked over sometime in the mid-1900s. Longtime employees say it once led to a narrow tunnel that ran underneath 5th Avenue…a tunnel used during Prohibition by bootleggers to move liquor from storage to speakeasies undetected. According to local legend, the Lagomarcino family didn’t run the bootlegging operation…they just let it pass through.

But here’s where it gets weirder: newer staff have reported hearing strange noises behind the bricked-up wall. Clinking glass. A faint echo of laughter. Even an old-fashioned phonograph playing music from a time long gone. Some say it’s just the building settling…but those who’ve worked there the longest never laugh it off.

In 2009, during renovations, contractors considered breaking through the wall to explore the space. They stopped after discovering an old, rusted flask wedged in the corner of the stairs…with a date and name etched into the leather strap. That name has since been tied to a man who disappeared from the area in 1931 and was never found.

The wall remains sealed.

Next time you’re sipping a phosphate or spooning up hot fudge at Lagomarcino’s, think about what might be a few feet below your chair. And if you hear something clink in the silence…maybe don’t ask for a refill just yet.
